hacking the screen

is there a way to "hack" the screen so that you can use all the features of the screen while driving?.... i found a $250 lock pick at https://www.coastaletech.com/GMLOCKPICK.htm

 

wanted to know if there was a ghetto cheaper way of doing it....

I just sent one of the LockPick's back, there were a lot of problems with the one for the Escalade's.

Try a local accesory retail shop....they might hook you up with a ghetto WAY

well, have a 07 denali xl with nav/dvd.

ordered the unit from g-nav, was costlier than others at $400+...

install was easy except taking the face plate was scary 'cause i didn't know where the tabs were....

anyway, it works well; as promised; except !, you can't change the dvd audio while it's engaged.... you have to go back to locked mode, change the volume, then hit the 'switch - mute button' 4x/5sec, to go back to dvd mode...

 

the steering column vol 'works' but it locks the dvd which allows the vol. change, then you'd have to go back to unlocking.... annoying if you have to change the volume often....

 

also, xm radio disappears while on dvd unlocked mode then comes back on, when dvd is locked again.... just some quirks....

 

there's 3 vendors; and they all have similar schemes - fooling the car into thinking it's in Parking Mode while it's moving.... speed sensor, etc etc.

 

if you want the pic of the face plate under side, let me know; i took pics of the back side.... it's surprisingly sturdy and won't crack with some use of force....

I just installed the one from coastaletech.com in about 20 minutes in my 07 Tahoe. Hardest part was prying the surrounding woodgrain panel off. Just when you think it's going to break on you, it pops off!

 

One thing to note about the coastaletech lockpick unit is that it also now enables the use of the destination inputs while driving. Basicly anything on the Dest screen and XM screen that would normally not be available while driving becomes usuable. You have to enable this mode by pushing the window lock button 4 times within 6 seconds and then it allows input for upto 60 seconds. Once 60 seconds are up it greys back out again and you have to tap the window lock button 4 times for an additional 60 seconds of fiddling time. Not sure why they decided on 60 seconds, they claim its a feature for our "conveniance" in the instructions. However it's probably just that they couldn't figure out how to always leave it unlocked. Oh well it accomplishes what I was after so I guess it's worth it.

I like the coastaltech ones too. Been recommending those, and helping people install them since they first were introduced.

bought one from a firm in ontario canada. works well and no time out issue on nav.

HOWEVER, the vol on dvd does NOT change after dvd unlock...you have to go back to dvd locked mode, change the vol. , then unlock... a bit annoying....

o/w the system works.

 

i agree; it was 'scary' trying to take the face plate off 'cause i didn't know where the tabs are,. i took a pic of the backside so if anyone wants it; please reply here with your email adr and i will send it.

I got my Generation 2 DVD Unlock from www.CoastalTech.com - Install was easy and seems to work exactly as advertised. I will get a chance to test it out in depth during the holidays.

just got my 2nd gen from cosataletech as well...gonna take the unit i bought from g-net and hope the new one allows volume change...i'm gonna leave mine on manual mode 'cause i don't wanna be distracted to video always if kids are watching in the back...i suppose i could leave it on audio/radio mode.... didn't think about that...

 

going to install 9" headrest screens and a 4 way remote switch that has a tv tuner built in... shop here says i could watch 'tv' on one screen, dvd in another, ps2/game console on another.... and put a 10" sub/300W JL audio system in the back... audio is ok except very low bass...

Let me know where you install the amplifier. I've got a 12" Kicker Solo Baric and a 750w amp. The only place I've thought of so far is right on the sub box... There just isn't any room under seats or in the side panels.

 

Also, how are you going to get a line-level input to the amp? My local audio place told me there will be a special type of adapter that isn't out yet. Something that will hook into the IP network system that GM uses with its electronics now. The other option is to use a signal dropped down from the rear speakers, but that wouldn't be the best for quality since my Amp doesn't have high-level inputs. I've used those converters before on other vehicles, and the sound quality was terrible.
