Day time running lights

I have a 99 yukon "old body" my daytime running lights stopped working. The indicator on the dash is lit, the parking brake is off and all fuses are good. What could it be and what to check? Any help would be great. Thanks

First, check the DRL fuse in the left side of the dash fuse block. If that's okay, it could be the DRL relay, the DRL module or the DRL diode.

I checked the fuse and thats good. What should I check nest? How do I test them and where are they located? I know where the diode is under the dash just right of the gas pedal it looks like a heatsink metal right? Can I just remove that diode and put a juper in there to test? I don't know where the relay is. I looked in the fuse box under the hood and where is the module. Thanks

Yes, that sounds like the diode. Dunno if you can just jump it. Never tried that. The relay is in the "convenience" center, which is agains the firewall, to the left of the steering column. The module is under the drivers side of the dash.

 

Here's the diagnosis for inop DRL's. Where there are two "Go to step ..." listed below each test, you go to the first one if the answer is yes, or the second one if the answer is no. Sorry for the lousy formatting which will make this very difficult to follow, but that's the best I can do with a cut and paste. I ain't about to try to type all that out myself to make it pretty.

Ensure that the park brake is not engaged.

Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.

Does the brake indicator lamp light?

Disconnect the daytime running lamps (DRL) module connector.

Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.

Connect a J 34142-B test lamp from the DRL module connector, cavity C, to ground.

Connect a J 34142-B test lamp from cavity C to cavity H of the DRL module connector.

 

Does the test lamp light?

Connect a J 34142-B test lamp the DRL relay, cavity G6, to ground.

Does the test lamp light?

Measure the voltage.

Is there batery voltage?

Do the low beam headlights light?

Connect a J 34142-B test lamp from cavity C (base) or cavity A (quad) to ground.

Connect a J 39200 DMM, set on ohms, between cavity A and ground.

 

Is there continuity?

Repair the open in CKT 39 (PNK) between the instrument panel (IP) fuse block and the DRL module.

Repair the open in CKT 150 (BLK) between the DRL module and ground G200.

 

Is the repair complete?

Inspect for an open in CKT 340 (ORN) between the IP fuse block and D203.

If an open is not found, inspect for an open in CKT 634 (YEL) between D203 and the convenience center.

If an open is not found, locate and replace diode D203.

Is the repair complete?

Repair the open in CKT 39 (PNK) between splice S213 and the convenience center.

Thanks for the info. I will try what I can this weekend. I am guessing thatafter each question answer 1 is no and 2 is yess? please correct me id I am wrong.

As I already said... where there are two "Go to step ..." listed below each test, you go to the first one if the answer is yes, or the second one if the answer is no.

 

I tried to figure out an easy way to post the actual, formatted page, but had no luck unless I was willing to cut and paste a whole bunch of screen captures together, which I wasn't.

 

I wish the forum software was better. Some allow directly pasting in images and things like that but not this one.

Thanks for the help I realy appricate it. I am having some trouble locating the relay and module. I look at the fuse box under the hood and none for DRL on the fire wall under the dash is the flasher and some other small metal relay or something. Would that be it? and as far as the module goes there is somuch stuff under th dash with the alarm that was put in I don't know what I am looking at. I went and looked at a Chiltom and Hayes manual to see if they showed it but no luck. Local people told me to look but they keep telling me to look for the system that is on the newer body style with the DRL in the markers. This is a 99 that looks like the 98 stle with the DRL as part of the headlights. Let me know of a manual or something that might show me what to look for. Once again tha you for all the help.

The DRL module is a small box taped to the harness under the left side of the dash. The relay is in the box that's against the firewall, just about where your left foot would rest while driving.

    • Hey guys, sorry for the confusison about this. This wasn't my experainnce, it was copied and pasted fom the net. 
    • The problem with failure rates or increase failures are there’s people who don’t have a problem. What are you doing wrong they say. We had 4 5.7 GM diesel’s in the family when they came out. One was flawless. My uncle who happened to be the most abusive. Early rotary engines were known to use oil. I abused my first car so bad in six months I replaced the clutch, transmission and rear end. It didn’t use oil. My brother in law has a 2013 Tahoe and an older Yukon. The Yukon has 280K miles. The Tahoe around 175K. He runs them to about 300K. If his lifters fail before that time he would consider it a failure. My Hondas, I know people hate it when I mention them. Identical engines. One with cylinder deactivation one doesn’t have it. One shudders when the eco light goes on or off. Cylinder deactivation. But wait! According to the web. It can happen with lock up too. So now people in the know are changing the oil and transmission fluid more often. Then you read it could be a programing issue. So what do you do? There’s lots of money involved. I see three ways to deal with it. One only works if you don’t drive lots of miles. Lease, never get out of warranty. Or only buy older vehicles with a good track record. They all have bad runs. Usually when there’s a change. Even Toyota and Honda. 
    • Question @diyer2 on this line if you please. Are you saying the shudder is the system turning on and off at the frequency of the shudder? Guess I'm asking if you are saying you have seen it do this with the bi-direction scan tool in graph mode? If so have you been able to discern the 'trigger'. Something is telling to cycle rapidly.    My truck just started doing this recently. 197K on the clock. My response has been M5 anything under 55 mph. I treat it like a lugging stick shift. Gear down and let it spin a bit. Engauge M5, then tow mode and then M6 lets the trans stay in 5th but the AFM is active. Smooth like Skippy.    My thought was that as a machine ages the friction gets lower and as the system is load based, the lower friction would allow it to turn on at ever lower rpm until it reaches the lugging point. And yes I am ignorant of any minimum rpm requirement for the system. If you know that would be useful information.    As you know I run a Scan-Gauge II which allows me to watch the On/Off of the signal to the VLOM. While in the shudder mode I'm not seeing is cycle at that frequency or at all for that matter outside the triggers @newdude posted a few years back. Now is it possible that the refresh rate isn't fast enough to catch it? Maybe. It is why I asked my first question about graphing and trigging parameter.     As we have observed from members here the failure point is all over the map miles wise as you note yourself in your opening post. That by itself begs a few questions like fellows that comment on these lifters failing even after the system has been disabled.     • UPDATE 2: Steering wheel control backlights and control of the cluster can supposedly be achieved by adding a wire to pin 20 of the cluster and tapping it to pin 2 of the main clock spring harness. I'm going to give it a shot - will update  
    • GM Global A pickups 2019-2022 can do OTA programming for the radio.  GM VIP (GM Global B) can do OTAs for almost every module on board.  So a 2022.5 and newer pickup can do OTAs for recalls like the 2.7 fuel flow recall.  EVs get OTAs that improve one pedal driving, radio issues, HVAC issues, updated battery management software, etc.     So age of the vehicle/what GM electrical platform its on will alter what amount of updates can be pushed on OTAs.
