Switched to Mobil 1

At 23,xxx miles I switched over to mobil 1 synthetic and napa gold oil filter. I have 2,875 miles on this mobil 1 oil change and the DIC is telling me to change my oil everytime I start the engine...

Before I switched over to mobil 1 with the dealer doing the oil changes, the DIC would say I have about 25% oil life left at 3,000 miles. Now with synethic it tells me I need to change before 3,000 miles.

I was planning on going to 6,000 miles on a change. Do I listen to the DIC or reset it (how do I reset it???)??

edit: oops wrong forum... mods please move. Thanks :)

Yep, you need to reset the Oil Life Monitor.

I go through two cycles of the OLM before changing the Mobil 1 in my GMC :)

I usually switch over at 50K. It's not scientific, just a number that make sense to me.

Honestly, with the tolerances modern engines are built within, switching at 75K-100K would make sense. I've just always switched at 50K.

I switched my Yukon 6L to Mobil1 at 3800 miles. Now I have 4800 and the OLI is at 84% which is amazing because my commute is all short distance stop & go. That is why I went synthetic. So I will change it at 3500 miles because of the use. But I am getting 19.8mpg highway and about 14.9mpg city with the synthetic vs dino. Which was 13.5 city and 17.2 hwy. So I guess it is worth it. :)

I switched over at 3,700 miles. Now at 7,900 miles the DIC says 9% oil life left. I did not reset the OLM when I changed because I wanted to see at what mileage it suggested I perform the first change.

The oil life monitor doesn't sample your oil, or even measure your oil pressure. It simply records the number of cold starts and hours/miles of engine operation. Then it does a lookup on a table and predicts how much oil life you have remaining.

If you run Mobil-1, or Pennzoil, 10W-50 or 5W-30, doesn't matter.

You could put M-1 in one truck, and Pennzoil in a different, identical truck, and then drive them both to all the same places, same cold starts, same everything, and they'll both flag oil life expiration at the same time.

Or you could change your own oil early, forget to reset the monitor, and have it tell you to change your oil 500 miles after you just changed it.

I think it's a pretty useless system, for both of the above reasons. I wish I could turn it off.

Just like Radio Shack prevents us from having any *real* electronics stores, this system prevents us from having a system that actually evaluates the *oil* film. Thanks, GM.

Maybe Toyota or Nissan will show us the way...

You've got issues :cool::D

How is it useless with most of the car buyers out there use dino oil and the OLM is setup for just that :)

Just because it doesn't suit our needs (synthetic oil users) doesn't make it useless :D

I am a Mobile 1 user since 5K miles now at 70K (not sure what is up with the 50K, 60K, 70K start recommendations?!?!?!) and find the OLM useless. Mike is right however. It does not sample the oil and only determines change intervals based on driving conditions. Do I have issues too?????
