Front brake pads

I took my 2006 GMC Sierra 2WD Extended Cab Short Box and i took it in to the dealer this morning for a driver front grinding noise. I thought it was a bearing but my service writer called me a few hours later and told me that i needed new front brake pads and my rotors needed to be resurfaced. I find this wierd only becasue the truck just turned 23,000 miles. What could be causing this premature break wear. they called GM Techline and they decided to replace them under warranty but again what could have caused this premature wear.

There are no known issues so I would say this is largely due to driving conditions and habits. I can't give you any other reason.
