Normal for NAV head unit?

Recommended Posts

Posted

I got my NAV head unit today, #15108421 (non-lux) for my Envoy which has the Bose option but non-lux amp.

Plug it in, powers up. I defeat Theftlock temporarily by unplugging the main radio harness and plugging it back in and the radio comes on but I get no sound

Im assuming that I need my amp programmed by the TECH 2? Has this occurred to others when installing the NAV head unit for the first time?

hmmm. I'm stumped. I did a search on your pn, and it looks like you have the non-lux nav, as you stated. If you're sure you Envoy is non-lux (no Y91 or Y92), then I don't understand why it isn't working. You could confrim by looking at your amp. If you don't know what a lux amp is supposed to look like, go to this ebay auction:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...58110952&rd=1,1

What I can tell you, though, is that if you have a non-lux Envoy, there's no need to program the amp. Non-lux amps do not need programming, ever.

Is there any doubt that you have a non-lux Envoy? Your problem would make sense if your Envoy was actually lux, and you bought a non-lux nav headunit.

Good luck and keep us posted. Sorry I can't be more help at this point.

Addendum: I just noticed your Envoy is an '02. I also saw your post in the other thread, about the Envoy's moving to Class II Data Bus in '02, instead of '03. I don't know if this is contributing to your problem, but how certain are you that your truck has class II data bus?

I sure hope you get it working. If not, I hope you can get your money back selling it again.

Like I said, keep us posted. I'm curious about the compatibility issue here in an '02 Envoy. Maybe somebody who knows more than me will spot this thread and be able to advise you.

Yup Im positive I have the Class 2 data bus. However, Im not entirely positive of which amp I have. I did go under the rear seat and found something that I believe to be the non-lux amp. My glovebox does NOT have the Y91 or Y92 codes. However, my Envoy did come equipped with the BOSE 6 disc, RPO Code UC6.

I did buy the non-lux NAV head unit because I dont have the Y91 or Y92 code in my glovebox, and whatever it is underneath my rear seat doesnt look anything like the BOSE amp pictured in that ebay auction you linked.

Now I havent had the NAV head unit unlocked yet - my friend is doing that with his TECH 2 at 5:30pm today. At that time, im going to have him re-program my amp (if possible). Ive heard of other people having the same problem (no sound while defeating theftlock temporarily).

Here is a picture of the BOSE 6 disc stereo that came in my truck, from the factory (has nothing about lux or non-lux on the side label at all)

I don't know about the 02 Voy but I have an 03. I had the same problem no sound. I had to have my hu programmed as a lux. My amp had 3 connectors on it. My truck has the early class 2 bus. After programming hu as lux it was plug and play.

Lucky2, is this something that machodan did for you??  I keep hearing his name on forums. I emailed him but havent gotten a response.  :banghead:

So you had a lux amp then?

Yes machomachodan did my HU.

Unlocking the theftlock won't help this problem. Your test method of unplugging the unit is sufficient for the test.

I would check all the connections, then double check all the connections by wiggling them. Then I would locate the Amp and confirm it is non lux by physically looking at it - it looks drastically different. Last...I would consult machodan since he is already part of the transaction and may have some troubleshooting hints.

If I remember right, I have heard about some folk that had similar problems. They raised the volume level B4 they took out the old HU and it helped the issue. BUt this sounds suspect to me. Do a search on the Avalanche fan club site. There are alot more GM AV geeks there that have solved these same issues. You'll have to search cause posting an "old" issue will result in few replies. I know the answer is there.

Dave- Ive been unable to get into contact with Machmachodan. And you said hes part of the transaction?? Ive never talked/dealt with him before. I just heard of him from other forums. I tried to contact him through ebay, its a no-go. Ebay says because I havent bid/bought anything from him, they wont send my message because its possible "spam". And right now hes not even selling anything I could pseudo bid on to get through the ebay mail system! :banghead:

lol...just my luck...

Anyways I just got back from my buddy's house. We cleared the VIN and just as you said, we couldnt get any music. Chimes work, Amp is showing "active" on the TECH 2, as is the new NAV radio.

Im suspecting I might have a LUX amp after all! I looked under the rear seat of which I thought was the amp originally and its really the OnStar module (says Motorola on it). I tried installing my old radio and turning up the volume and installing the NAV radio - no go. According to the TECH 2, my AMP is part 15070015, can anybody tell me if thats lux or non lux?

Where is the amp on a T360??

Ok. Next Question: I have amp #15070015. Is that an amp that would require a LUX nav stereo or NON LUX stereo?

Sorry..I thought I read you were dealing with machodan, my bad.

Also, I saw your post on the AV Fan club board. You'll get good info there.

I was wondering, now that you've seen your amp, does it look like the one in the diagram?

The non-lux amp I took out of my '03 Silverado does not look like the one in that diagram, and neither does the lux amp I put in it. I have seen some lux amps on eBay that came out of pre-'03 GM vehicles, and they looked more like the one in the diagram.

I gues what I'm getting at is this: what if you have a lux amp, but since your truck is an '02, it just looks different from the lux amps in the '03-'06 trucks?

UPDATE: MachoDan got a hold of me :gmc: and it appears I, along with many others out there on the net - have goofed big time.

2002-2003 Envoys with the BOSE system have the Class 2 amp whereas newer Envoys often get equipped with the "dumb amp" sometimes. Therefore, the only NAV head unit to work in my 2002 Envoy is a LUX unit. I bought a non-lux because there is a lot of mis-information out here. According to most NAV

"upgraders" you should have a Y91 or Y92 RPO code, of which I have neither so I assumed I had the non-lux system and I actually have the lux. This hasnt been done too many times on an Envoy/TB, or at least there havent been any write-ups by Envoy/TB owners. Im going to change that! :D

MachoDan is going to trade me a LUX unit and program it and everything. I will definately update as things progress and expect a nice thorough write-up on installing a NAV in a GMT360 :banghead:

Well, at least things are going to work out for you.

Most of the info on these sites is good, but apparently not applicable to your truck.

Yeah it was my fault too for not doing my own research (like looking in GM service manuals or talking to my friend whos an actual technician at a GM dealer) :banghead:

Plus, a lot of hang up was on the Class 2 data bus. I understand the CK, or full size GM trucks didnt get the class 2 data bus until 2003. Not so for the T360's who got it upon introduction to the market in 2002. So that was a doozy. A lot of people get that mixed up with the full size trucks which are 2 totally different ball games.

Then the whole amplifier situation, which is confusing enough even if you dont have a T360, caused much more ado because apparently early on T360's received the Class 2 amp with the BOSE system, of which I have. So it was easy to mix up, I mean 2004 + models of T360's got different variations of amplifiers ranging from the "dumb amp" to the LUX BOSE amp. :gmc: And my 02 Envoy has NO RPO codes relating to any kind of amp besides UC6 and UQA both relating to the Bose Premium 6 disc sound system. Would've been nice if they had RPO'ed the amp!

In the meantime, while coordinating this project Ive spread myself across many forums, so Im going to develop a write up for T360 owners abroad who want to take this project on :D so it will be easier for the next Envoy/Trailblazer/Rainier/Bravada/Ascender owner.
