Camper-Style Heated Mirrors

Recommended Posts

I have the heated camper-style mirrors (DPF code) and I would like to know is there a way to tell if they are working if there are not frozen. My 3 years factory warranty is about to expire and it usually dosen't get cold enough on a regular basis where I live to freeze up the mirrors to test them, so is there any way to know if they are working, should they get hot or warm to the touch, do they only work if it's below 32 degrees. Witht the engine running I know the light on the control button comes on and the fuse is ok. Any ideas...thanks

I drive tractor-trailer here in Maine and have the heated mirrors. You can feel the mirror surface and feel the heat. My wife's pickup has the heated mirrors and I do believe you can feel the surface for heat.

Hey guys i have heated mirriors also but i thought they were just always on. Where is the switch to turn them on ? Is the switch for the rear defoger the same button?

Is the switch for the rear defoger the same button?

Yep,Its the same button.

NO it is not the same button as the rear defogger!, its the button on the Right or Left switch on the drivers side door, there's three postions on that switch: Right, Left, and the middle position which is the heated mirror spot, and the heated mirror logo lights up below that on the directional button when there turned on

Ok - Now I'm confused.......I have an 02 HD with the standard mirrors and It says to just hit the rear window defogger button to turn the heated mirrors on ??

Anyway - Is there a way to check them...the other day I thought my driver side wasnt working......if its not - anyone have an idea how to fix it ??

It may not apply with the new camper mirrors. I have the twin-post extendable mirrors with power and turn signal, but it doesn't heat and manually extends/folds.

Yes,It is the same button as the rear window defogger switch, when you turn on the rear window defogger this also turns the heat on for the mirrors.

The light your talking about in the mirror switch is for the power fold feature (or the power extend feature for the camper mirrors) When the mirror logo is lite-up this means that the mirrors will fold in or out at the touch of either of the left or right of the directional adjustment button.

The light being on has nothing to do with the heat feature.

Many trucks out there have heated mirrors but do not have the power-fold or power extend feature,These trucks will not have a lighted mirror logo in the middle of there adjustment button.

Heres what the owners manual says.....

Outside Heated Mirrors

The vehicle may have outside heated mirrors which helps clear them of condensation, snow, and ice.

When the rear window defogger button is pressed, the heated mirrors are also turned on. . See "Rear Window Defogger" under Climate Control System for further information.

Heres what the owners manual says on the power fold mirrors and the mirror logo light.....

Outside Power Foldaway Mirrors

If your vehicle is equipped with this feature, the controls are located on the driver's door armrest.

Move the upper selector switch to the left or right to choose the mirror you want to adjust; then press the dots located on the four-way control pad to adjust the mirror.

The mirrors may also include a memory function which works together with the memory seats. See "Memory Seats" under Memory Seat for more information.

To fold or unfold the mirrors, move the selector switch, located above the mirror control, to the middle position. The mirror control will illuminate. Press the right or left side of the mirror control to fold or unfold the mirrors. You may notice the mirror glass adjust as the mirrors fold in; this is normal. The mirror glass will reposition itself once the mirrors are unfolded.

If you have the camper mirrors with power adjustment and turn-signals in them (RPO Option code DPN) you should have the heated mirrors also, although just the upper portion will heat.

If you PM me your VIN and e-mail address I can run a build sheet for you and we can double check.

Just wondering, is it a common problem for the extending mirror to vibrate out a little bit? It seems like every other time I'm driving, I notice the mirrors have extended out about 1/8-1/4". That and at highway speeds, forget about trying to use the mirrors to check the lanes.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Some customers may comment that their Outside Rear View Camper Mirror (RPO DPN) takes excessive force to extend. Root cause appears to be that the inner bracket springs were too small in diameter.

Recommendation/Instructions:

While engineering is pursing a design improvements, dealers should lube both the upper and lower tubes with LPS 1 greaseless lubricant or equivalent to allow for easier mirror extension. Apply lubricant (aerosol) to both upper and lower tubes, extend mirrors and re-apply lube to the tubes. Extend and retract mirror several times to complete process.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Some customers may comment that their outside rear view camper mirror (RPO DPN) glass (Passenger side) can not be positioned to allow the driver to see the right side of the vehicle. Root cause may be a pinched wire harness which interferes with the mirror glass operation. This condition has been corrected at the assembly plants effective 8/15/05.

Recommendation/Instructions:

To Correct this concern zip tie back the wire harness to the left side of the glass stop on the inboard side.

Remove upper flat glass by placing flathead screwdriver (or similar device) in between the upper & lower glass and push the upper glass up.

Tip: Tilt the glass down and use the spring finger ramp as the lever point.

Pull out the upper glass. (lower glass does not need to be removed)

Tuck the large wire harness to the inboard side (closest to vehicle) of the inboard glass stop.

Place a zip tie around the plastic bracket near the screw and fasten the wire harness.

Trim the excess material once the zip tie is secured.

Install top glass by placing back into original position, and then place a flathead screwdriver (or similar device) in between the top of the shell and the top of the glass and pop the glass into locked position by pushing down.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
