Homelink additon

I have searched for an answer but can't find a definite answer. What does it take to add Homelink to a non-homelink equipped truck? Is the Homelink unit self contained (plug in power and go)?

I want to go with a factory installation and have been looking on Ebay but I need to know what options I have. Can I simply use my overhead console and replace the insert or do I have to buy the complete overhead console?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

If you already have the full overhead console, You can shop ebay for an overhead console from any Fullsize or S-size SUV. All you need is the panel that has the three homelink buttons on it anyway.

I am looking for the thread I had when I updated my 2000 GMC to homelink, but I cannot find it.

I was able to find a full console with teh homelink panel. I swapped the panel with the single button type from my truck and resold the console on ebay, it ended up selling for twice what I paid for it originally :D

Patience pays off sometimes.

Here is a good thread on this from FSC:

I have the 'short' console right now..... even though I would like to upgrade to the full console for more storage and lighting.

Was a full console offered on the 03+ trucks, I don't recall ever seeing one?

Your right, no full overhead console after 02. I have the Homelink option, but it was only available with the sunroof option. Check SUV part numbers though. My grandfather owned an 03 Denali with homelink and no sunroof, so I am sure they are out there.

Thanks for the info.... I have been searching Ebay lately comparing the different consoles to see if they will fit. I wish someone would chime in that had put a full console in a 03+ truck.

The search goes on..................

Stupid question, what is the home link thing? I see alot of people talkin about it but have never understood what it does. Sorry to hijack.

Homelink is used to operate your garage door and other devices.

I installed homelink in my 06 2500HD, I bought an overhead console off ebay that came out of a Suburban or Tahoe. The key is to find one that DOES NOT have the sunroof switch, because that console is shorter. I learned the hard way. The consoles that come out of the big SUVs usually have the rear hvac controls in them which can be easily removed and the pocket put in its place. It takes a bit of work, but it can be done. Good luck!!

This is exactly what I did. I bought a Tahoe unit with the rear air controls and swapped out the HVAC controls for the pocket off my original console. If you are patient, the one that you need will appear on Ebay - just make sure that it is the non-sunroof version.

It took me about 10 minutes to swap things around and get the new console installed. The homelink unit will plug right in to the wiring harness for the existing map lights.

Good luck!

Thanks! That's what I needed to know.... glad I read this because I almost bid on a console with the sunroof control (figured I could wire up fogs or something and put the switch in the place of the sunroof switch). I'll have to start looking through Ebay or I might call a local salvage yard to see what he can get me one for. I had a feeling that the heater controls could be exchanged for the pocket (seems to be a true 'plug and play' mod).

Thanks again for the info  .

Wasn't it for some sort of temp/compass direction panel.... like a driver information center?
