Cutting off tailpipe?

Recommended Posts

I have a 2000 Chevy Silverado with a 5.3. I was thinking about cutting off the tailpipe just around the rear axle. Its really not that great of a reason, I just want to kinda hide the exhaust I guess. Will cutting off the tailpipe cause any problems or are there any reasons not to do it?

I think there might be an issue, of where the exhaust fumes are going to go. I think the idea is to get them away as far as possible. If you are moving along all should be fine, but not sure what would happen if you were idling a long time.

Still I have never done it, so I don't really know.

I've heard before that doing that can cause excess moisture (from the exhaust) to start rusting out your truck underneight.

Sounds like an urband legand......but thought I'd share just in case.

The exhaust is corrosive to a certain extent, the whole underside would look like the inside of the tail pipe. Eeeewwww.

I can't quite tell, but it looks as if you have cut off your tailpipe aswell... have you?

I moved it in front of the tire, it got crunched when backing up in some brush.

Oh ok, i see that now. Do you have the stock exhaust or have you changed it?

how about cutting it and adding a turn down piece, also i would make sure its not pointed towards the axle, a friend had a rear start seaping from exhaust heating up the axle fluid.

It's a cat-back system. Gibson Super truck. I bought it because it was cheap, and bolt on, I didn't want Tweedle Dee and his assistant Tweedle Dumb cutting and welding on my truck, plus I can return it to stock if I so desire.
