FUEL GAUGE NEEDLE

MY 1999 GMC SUBURBAN 5.7L K1500 117,250 MILES HAS AN ISSUE WITH THE FUEL GAUGE NEEDLE THAT JUST VIBRATES/QUIVERS ALL THE TIME. ANY IDEA'S?

The needle on my '98 started doing that a few months before the sending unit on the in-tank pump/pickup went bad.

Did you have to replace the fuel pump also or just the sending unit?

Don't know for sure if this applies to the newer trucks, but in the older ones, the gauges used a damping mechanism, which I believe was a viscous fluid, that would dampen needle movement. This would prevent the needle from moving quickly with every little change. When this damping mechanism failed (leaked out?), the needle would do what you described.

 

The fix was to replace the gauge, which were separate components back then. If this is what's wrong with yours, and I'm not sure it is, the cluster would need to be sent out for repairs.
