Smoke Stack Exhaust on a 5.3L -- Possible?

Recommended Posts

I have 2000 Sierra that is lifted 9" and would love to switch my straight-pipe duals to a stack(s) through the bed. Is this possible on a gas engine or will I not have enough backpressure? Thanks.

I have 2.75 pipes now, with the stacks I would want dual 4-5" pipes, or possibly even a single 5". If I couldn't get the big pipe(s) I wouldn't do it.

2000 GMC Sierra Z71 5.3L Vortec

AEM Brute Force Intake System

Granatelli MAF Sensor

Superchips Tuner

True Dual Exhaust, Straight Pipes after cats

9" Lift (6" Superlift 3" PA Body)

35x14.50 Iroks

18x10 Classic Locks

Alpine IVA-D900 DVD Headunit

PS2 w/ dual wireless controllers

Alpine Type-R 10" Subs (2)

Kenwood 950W Amps (2)

Digital 1-Farad Capacitor w/ LED Readout

Billet Grille

Carbon Fiber Taillights

Custom Fitted 3/4 Ton Alcoa 5" Aluminum Driveshaft

3.73's

ARE Fiberglass Locking Bedlid, Painted to Match

What should I do next?

I'm looking into swapping in a 3/4 ton 14-bolt axle, then adding Bushwacker Cut-Out Fender Flares and upgrading to either a 37x13.50 or 38x15.50 (if they fit). Also would like a Cowl-Induction hood.

You can do anything you want and can afford, if you can't do it, I,m sure you can find a muffler shop that could, I havn't seen stacks on a pick-up in years, but yes, it can be done, but as for the look, you'd have to have the right truck or it would look like crapp. :banghead:

See that looks bad-ass, but that's on a diesel. Hell you could even get away w/it on an 8.1 that's built up a little. However, on a 5.3, if you had 4-5 inch stacks, you would have almost NO backpressure and it'd probably sound like crap too. The problem comes in when your exhaust gasses slow down too much and cool...which is about what you'd have with a 5.3.

You could still run a full exhaust back to the stacks including the muffler to get your back pressure. You could even run them inside all the way to the end of the stacks maybe a foot short of the end.

Personally I wouldn't. If it's not a diesel in my opinion it shouldn't have smoke stacks. But that's just how I feel.

Someone already mentioned it. You can do it if you have the money and the desire. But do you really want to? That's the real question.

You could run it thru the muffler(s) under bed or in the bed to keep your backpressure then put any size up pipes you like.

That's that I was thinking.

That...Or the actual pipes can stay at 2.5", and just encase them in some thicker tubing.

Anybody else remember the "Lil' Red Express"? I used to want one SO bad.

In the white truck up above, wouldn't you be conserned about rain getting down into your exhaust? I'm sure it wouldn't happen while running as the exhause would either blow out most of it before it entered, or if any did it would quickly dry up and be blown out. What I'm wondering is if your truck was parked overnight, wouldn't you get considerable amounts of water inside?

I love the look of the stacks on the outside better then the inside. I don't know what it is I just think it looks more like it should. Although with the stacks on the inside of the bed as they are up above it does give it a clean modern look to it. I like them both but think I like the external ones up through the stepsides better....

yes, it can definitely be done. i've seen at least 4 or 5 around here, but personally, i think they are hideous. they look better on semi tractors. I dont really like the sound on them, either, but that was without mufflers or anything.

But its what YOU want, so if you like them, then go for it!
