Towing wiring.

Okay. Since my 99 Sierra has been through 6 different owners, I have come to look at the towing wires and the trailer light wires. All of them have been cut, stripped, and then some.

 

First question. How do I go about sorting the wires to the extent where I can use them?

Second question. Is this the right connection I need for the Hitch trailer light wiring? If not, what do I need?

It depends on the type of trailer you're going to be pulling. I personally just wire up the 7-round plug (the big one you have a picture of) and then buy/make adapters to pull 4-flats or whatever other trailer plug I need. As for wiring it properly, it helps to have an assistant to determine what wire is what. I just re-wired my truck the other day, but for the life of me I can't find the diagrams of how it was done.

Well, it's not so much a trailer. It's a hitch cover tail-light/break light I want to put on. Right now I'm not going to haul any trailers as we don't have any or have a reason to.

I just figured out what the 4-way flat connector I got was, it's just an extension. I don't need one, unless we need it when we do the wiring for the light.

 

EDIT:

 

Is it possible and/or advisable to butcher the extension wires and wire the truck's wires and then connect it to the light using the correct connector from the extension connector?
