Security System... ACK!

I just want to start off by staying thanks to all that replied to my last post. Everyone was extremely helpful. Thanks.

Now for the problem... I have a 2000 Silverado 1500 with the 4.3 litre and A/T. When trying to start, the security light with come on and i'll have to wait 20+ minutes before I can start it up again. This happens periodcally and I never know when it will. It happens in the worst situations though... go figure.

Anyway... I took the truck to my local GM dealer and they tested it out. They found a sensor in the steering column putting out low voltage and I had it replaced to the tune of $500. Not a week later the same problem happen and had to wait 20+ minutes. I immeadlty took it back to GM and they could find nothing wrong, and told me to bring it back when the security light came on. Hmmm, like I am going to be able to.

Just yesterday I had the entire ignition cylinder replaced thinking that might be the problem. Now it is worse. The security light is on 75% of the time while driving.

Any assitance is greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

The good news is that the light is on more than before, which gives you half a chance that the problem may be found. Pay close attention to what you do when you enter the truck and then start it--do use the key or remote to open the door, or is the door locked at all? Do you wait sometimes to start the truck (not because of the security system)? Do you leave certain accessories on or off sometimes? If you can replicate the problem you will save yourself a lot of money because the dealer can pinpoint the issue and repair it directly without spending a lot of time finding the problem.

Are you using the factory key, or an aftermarket spare, or extra? The reason I am curious is because of gm's passkey antitheft system. The key has a resistance value that the security system recognizes. If its not the stock key, then the resistance value could be differant. This should cause the problem all of the time though. That makes me wonder if there is a problem with your passlock, or even the body control module. just food for thought.

It's very apparent that the problems with the GM Passlock system are everywhere. I have a 1998 silverado Ex cab 4x4 with no remote start and I've been having problems with Passlock system for about a year and a half. It started out as once and a while but now it's all the time. It's got me so ticked off I'm ready to burn my truck to the ground and buy a Ford. I did find the instructions in one of the posts to bypass the system but it failed to work. The instructions for my year said to locate the yellow and orange/black wire coming from the sensor on the ignition switch. Expose some wire and measure the resistance while cranking. I got 2.6m ohms. I built a resistor to 2.4m ohms and soldered it between the two wires. This should fool the Passlock module in to thinking the resistance is ok thus enabling the engine to start. The theory is sound but like I said it didn't work.

When I put the resistor in the Passlock system was in fault. I waited 10 minutes before trying to start the engine but it failed. Before trying it again I would like to check the connections on the Passlock module.

Where the heck is the Passlock module??????? Anyone????

I had called the dealer a while back and they said it would cost between 200-600 bucks to fix it, I don't think so..... I wonder, it there a way to completely remove the Passlock system from the engine start sequence?

Does anybody have a complete wiring diagram for a 98 silverado? The book I have has everything in the wiring diagram except for the Passlock system. I'm so ticked off, this problem has left me stranded on a few occassions and it sucks. please help me.........

Been there, done that....used the T-shirt to clean up.

I replaced the Ignition Cylinder too....same problem. First, make sure you KNOW the code number for your VATS (Vehicle Anti-Theft System). ..and make sure your key is coded for the proper resistance.

The vast majority of the time, the SECURITY light will light if the resistor in your key is near one of the extreme ends of the allowable range...or (if your have either keyless entry or power door locks), if the driver's door lock is not unlocking completely.

Sad to say, as far as I know, ONLY a GM dealer can reprogram your VATS to fir your new key. Also, I'm not sure how you would go about checking and fixing a power door lock situation, as I don't have this.

Hope it helps

you paid 500.00 and they didnt fix the problem?

Id be on the phone to the manager and if that dont work

I pay with a CC and I can get it refunded if the service they provided was incorrectly repaired.

for way less then 500 you could have got a passlock bypass module at a alarm installer.
