Choppy idle on starts

My 4.8L is beginning to have a choppy idle when I crank it (even after driving for a while then restarting). When I start it up, it seems to almost die, rev up to about 600RPMs, drop to almost 0, then idle fine after that.

The funny thing is that I only have about 43,000 miles on the engine (it is a 2000 model), due to my visiting the "The Great Sand Box" on many occasions (yes, I'm one of Uncle Sams kids). :nopity:

Anyway, where do you think I should start? I don't smell any gas at any time when it does this. I was thinking it might be the fuel pump. Sometimes when I first crank it in the morning, when I turn the key to the ON position, I can hear the pump making a louder than normal whine.

Any suggestions...

Thanks,

Have you changed the fuel & air filters? If not, that is where I would start. I had a load of watery gas in my 02 suburban 5.3 that cause a similar issue. Lucky for me the filter worked and caught most of it. If you haven't changed that filter (I change mine every 25k) do so and see if it is restricting the fuel flow. If that is the issue I would also run a few bottles of techron through the system.
