Synthetic oil -vs- petrol oil

My husband wants to change my petroleum based oil to synthetic oil. I think its ok for his rice burners, but it kind of goes against my grain in 2500HD. Anyone out there with experience in this area?

The bottom line is that the synthetic oils are better than regular "dino" oils. From what I have seen using synthetics when I tore down a Supercharged motor that had over 114,000 miles on it and 90,000+ was with the blower on it, was that the oil worked great. The two oils I used was Mobil 1 or Castrol and even with #1 ringlands that had cracked the motor did NOT have to be bored one bit. I could still still the factory hash marks in all the bores and when we checked all the bores were within factory new specs. This was on my Supercharged 1995 z28 Camaro. The reason the motor ringlands cracked was that the FMU that came with the SC kit went bad. Just my two cents. Good luck.

No worries going to synthetic. It will be better for your HD motor, espectially if you live in a hot or cold climate or tow or haul.

Thank you also, makes me feel some better. Ive had GM trucks for alot of years with no probs. Las Vegas gets REALLy hot so I wanted to do this change before summer hits.

I use Mobil 1 in two of my four vehicles. My Corvette and Acura RDX (Turbo) both came from the factory with Mobil 1. I don’t think 2 major automakers would recommend synthetic unless it was worth it. They would save $$ if they didn’t believe it was important. I also ran mobil 1 in my Tahoe until I sold it to improve gas mileage and durability. My .02

Glad I could help. Another good thing with the synthetic is that I don't worry about the heat or cold effecting the oil as much, and I know it is safe to go to 4000-5000 miles before a oil change. Also since you live in Vegas you know how hot it could be. I was stationed out at FT Irwin with is by Barstow CA. Well long story short since FT Irwin is basically below Death Valley, it maybe the one place that gets a little hotter than Vegas, and I had no issues with running a synthetic in my 2500 Suburban and my Camaro when I was stationed there. I have not myself "yet" but I have had 3 people tell me that royal purple and I hope I got the name correct is supposed to be very good and you can change from regular oil to this stuff and not have to worry about cleaning the old oil out and by the second oil change it is all synth. oil.

 

They were also saying it does not break down as fast as regular oil but it is a little more expensive than most synth. oil and holds up better in heat and cold than regular oil.

Agree, especially in the heat of LV. A friend of mine moved out there four years ago and when he switched his Harley over to synthetic his oil temperature on his Harley droped 8 degrees. The beauty of running a synthetic, holds up to the extreme heat as well as helps cool better than regular oil, it also makes for easyer starting in the extreme cold and faster oil flow to the top half of the engine.

    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver. 
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....  
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps. 
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.  
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
