TCC valve

I am really glad to find this website. I have been haveing trouble with my 1996 automatric tran. 2500 chev. truck when I drive it in overdrive. It acts like it slips out when I get to about 40mph, and the rpms skyrocket. It drives fine in 3rd, 2nd, or 1st. I took it to a home mechanic and after working on it for a week he said it was the TCC valve. He quoted me an outrageous price to fix it. I just want to know what a fair price is for a fix like this and where exactly in the transmission it is. Is it really that hard of a job to cost more to fix it that to put a remanufactured tranny in it?

Well, what do you consider to be an outrageous price?

He told me it would be $600.00 just for labor, and then parts on top of that. After that he said he might be able to do it a little cheaper. Is that a fair price or am I a little to tight?

That sounds high...you can get a complete rebuild with a better sun gear for about $1400.

Can any of you guys explain this problem (TCC valve) to me and tell me exactly where it might be inside the transmission? Would this fix be a pain for a mechanic?
