Headers

I am thinking about getting headers for my '00 5.3 Silverado and was wondering what types and why? Price is also a big factor. I want something that is gonna make my truck sound great since my Flowmaster 40 series is less than, well less than I hoped it would be. I could do research on my own but every manufacturer says they have the best and price hunting is a bear so any and all knowledge is appreciated.

Yea, Flows suck. All I will say is go long tubes or you will regret it. First off, do you have emissions testing where you live? That will pretty much dictate what you can and cant use. Gotta be careful what you choose if you would like to keep your low end. Go too big on the primary or the collector and you will lose some of that bottom end grunt. Another thing to keep in mind is what are you willing to do to install the headers. But on with the header list.

Long tubes in no special order:

Dynatech Supermaxx: either get a full system with hi-flow cats no welding needed, or get the headers alone. $1000-$1500

StainlessWorks: on the same pricing deal as the Dynatechs, not cheap at all. But they are SS. $699-$1000

Thorley Tri-Y's: excellent build quality and coating, Tri-Y design boasting killer low end (I bought some) $550-$610

PaceSetter: crappy header, crappy coating. Cheap LT with availible catless y-pipe $290-$475

Arizona Speed: fairly nice header, makes good power. Coating is terrible! $645-$750

Midlength headers:

TOG: good headers. If you can come across some snag 'em!! TOG is no longer in business. CARB LEGAL Cant remember price

Dougs Headers: excellent quality header, good coating. Exact same design as the TOG header!! CARB LEGAL $479-$600

Bassani Optilength: havent heard much of these. For being a mid they cost too much. Unsure or price

What about Hooker Super Comps??

After pulling a set from stock to check them out... Im am not impressed. The Pacesetters are actually built better with a better machined flange!!!! ALTHOUGH!!! The Hookers can be bought in a 1 3/4 or 1 5/8 primary for the N/A or F/I guys. 1 5/8 being a better choice for N/A 5.3's.

cool, thorley tri-y's seem to be the best fit for me. I live in Texas but have no clue about emissions. I am very willing to install them myself, arn't they just bolt on anyway?

btw what is the difference between thorley's DTE-310Y, Y-C, Y-DA, Y-DA-C (product codes for headers that fit my truck)? They all seem to have the same specs. Summit has the DTE-310Y's for 448. Also did you notice any gain in mpg, I'm really just going for sound and long term monetary gain would be great.

They are not a direct bolt-on. Youll need to cut a little bit of tubing off in front of each cat. Then weld a flange to those pipes, which then bolt to the headers, but still easy!! I havent yet put mine on. I got them based solely on testament from guys that have bought them and installed them. They all commend the low-end gain of these plus the broad TQ gain. They will not make a ton of power in the 6000+ rpm range. But in a street driven truck, with stock TQ converter. You need that low-end grunt. Talk to some guys on PT.net and ask them about their low end and how it sucks. If you go to big on the primary, you WILL lose some grunt. Fact! My friend put some in his old 02 and shortly took them off. 1 3/4 primaries arent the way to go on a daily driven, N/A truck.

If all you want is sound, then get new exhaust!

You want the DTE-310Y!!
