camping with your truck

anyone here do any camping with your truck? i have been tossing around the idea of using a tarp to make a roof, draping a bug nut around the bed, and using an air matress. i have also been thinking about a truck tent, but dont really see a point in the added cost. why put a tent on the ground when you have a rock free bed to use! what do you all do..just looking at options, maybe give me diff look on my tarp idea.

How about one of these. My brother in-law has one for his chevy and loves it. Not the extact one, but something similar.

I have a fiberglass cabhigh cap on my truck and I sleep in there when I go trout fishing etc... In fact I've spent the night in there at the race track too...

I don't camp in my truck because I have a travel trailer, but I think my setup wouldn't be bad if you had to sleep in the truck bed. I also have a cab high lined fiberglass cap and I have a Bed Rug bed liner. If you've never seen one it's basically a padded all weather carpet bed liner. Real easy on the knees when I have to crawl in the bed.

for what it's worth though you might be able to buy a decent used pull behind folding camper for what a nice fiberglass cap costs nowadays. I think my cap was $1800. That's nuts.

I bought a fiberglass canopy with sliding windows with screen on the inside for my hunting this year. Dry, warm and bug/BEAR free. I watched a male grizzley walk thru the camp this year, its nice to be off the ground and somewhat protected, to bad the guns were locked in the truck. The topper is o.k. but not very useful for some people with quads ect.. But it is 100% dry and with a sliding rear window its great.

I had a 04 Colorado that I purchased the GM bed tent and air mattress for. That was by far the best item I purchased for that truck. Not to pricey, short setup, decent materials and a fly over the tailgate. The only PITA was when I wanted to drive the truck I had to take it down.

I would rather be of the ground no matter what.

My $0.02

There's the Sportz Tent. they even have them for the Avalanche.

or

A canvas topper like Can-Back

8' cabover camper for me. I have occasionally slept in the bed with my topper. Just unroll a small carpet scrap to soften up the ribs in the bed
