Downshifting on steep grades

I am new to towing a fifth wheel.

I have the 2001 Hd Silverado with the 6.0 vortec and 4:10 rear end.

When going down steep grades in our national park I shifted down to third ,then to second, and since it was really steep to first. Does this shifting while going down a hill hurt the transmission ?

It shouldn't hurt the tranny.  Plus it will save your brakes!!!

 

I do this when I'm unloaded from time to time, so I can avoid riding the brakes coming down long hills...  I also do it when towing too...

You shouldn't hurt the tranny, but if at all possible I'd downshift before heading down the slope or gaining quite a bit of speed.  Use lower gears to keep the load from gaining speed, not to slow it down from higher speeds.  Also keep in mind, an auto tranny will not give you near the same compression braking that a manual tranny will.  While it will provide some, brake use will not be eliminated.
