wind shield replace\ment ????

Might sound like a strange question, but my 04 burb has had more stones hit the frt window that I think are normal. had many repaired and entire wind shield replaced. My question is this, does a bug deflector make a differnce ? I have one but a cheapo tiny one. Ive seen some that really sweep up and might push wind up and over the top. And no , I dont ride behind big trucks if I can help it. Just seems every stone has my name on it.

I have had quite a few rocks hitting the windshield. My insurance pays for the quick glue fix but not complete replacement. I believe this varies by state. If it were Massachusetts, I would throw a large rock through the windshield and have insurance replace it. The glue trick basically stops the chip from growing and makes it almost disappear. I have a Lund bug shield and if it actually improves the rock problem, I can't imagine how bad it is without one.

Here is something to look at. Have you replaced you tires lately? I just did and noticed that the deeper treads in the tires are picking up all kinds of rocks and flinging them. I have aquired a few windshield hits, and lots of extra chips in the paint. It also doesn't help that I live down a gravel road.

interesting, I haven't had to replace a windshield due to a rock hit in years... bb's yes, but no rocks. I have had a bug flector of sorts on all my trucks, mostly bc it saves the paint on the nose.

I was just getting ready to post a query as to whether anyone had noticed more windshield hits than usual when I saw this one. I have an 04 Z71 SWB. I bought it new. I now have over 5 visible places where rocks have hit it. I do not drive it off road. I have several different types of vehicles and not one has ever had a rock hit hard enough to break the glass. This Chevy is a rock magnet! Maybe it is because it is higher than most cars? I wondered if perhaps the angle of the windshield was such that it could not deflect the energy from a rock strike? All I know is it is uncanny how often I seem to be hit in this truck?

Here in Alaska my windsheild takes probably a good 3-4 rocks a day. Im not talking little pebbles either, this is some industrial size quarry type s**t. I bought the truck August of 06 and had a full crack stretched across the windshield by December. Since then i have aquired about 10 more chips and my main crack is starting to split to make a new path.

There are a ton of people who have bug deflectors up here and I really dont see any difference from theres or mine. For a bug deflector to move a rock off its trajectory that would take an enourmous force of wind. That rock is probably traveling a good 15mph+ when it hits. I hardly think a bug deflector will make too much difference. It may push the rock just enough to the top of the windshield but it wont move it clear of you. Theres just not enough room between the deflector and the windshield.

In short, yeah i get slammed almost daily and no deflectors dont work. Not up here anways.

To add to this for comparison.

I had a '02 and '03 Grand Prix here and both of which had busted windshields. So ride hight didnt seem to play a factor. I usually dont tailgate either, but in heavy traffic theres just no choice.

I currently have 3 large chips, and a large crack in my windshield from this past winter. In the winter, Montana uses gravel on the roads instead of salt, so there are quite a few windshield shops up here.

From what I've heard, bug shields do nothing for bugs, let alone rocks.

the only reason I put a bug deflector on my truck was to protect the paint on the nose of the hood. The HD hood bulge is a rather large target.

As for them deflecting stones. No way. The mass of the stone overcomes any kind of wind change a deflector makes. And as for bugs, try driving down the Lochsa river in Idaho on a summer evening. Sounds like it's raining from all the bugs hitting the windshield. The deflector isn't doing doo dah.

I have to add the same, seems bug deflectors are good for protecting the paint but thats about it. I had my windshield replaced about 2 mos ago after my buddy tapped on a chip in the winshield saying "hey look at this one heheheheh", well barely touching it spider webbed the windshield and I mean barely touching. In a few weeks it turned into the entire windshield being cracked top to bottom side to side and thats a very dangerous situtation especially if a good sized rock comes up and hits you again since your window integrity is majorly compromised.
