Replaced Driveshaft

I was having a slight problem with a vibration or shudder when I would take off from a standing start.  A few times it was rather severe, and it was more noticable when I was carrying a load or towing.  I presented the TSB to my friends at Bissett Chevy where I bought the truck, and they ordered me a new 1-piece drive shaft to replace the 2-piece drive shaft and carrier bearing in my truck...

 

They had to cut the carrier bearing out of the crossmember and I think they did a fine job, and to top it off they took less than 2 hours for the total job.  

 

Here is a shot of where the carrier bearing used to be...

Cool, at least they didn't cut a big chunk out of the cross memeber itself, like I seen happen to another guy.  :thumbs:

I saw those pics too....  I think he got a new truck for that didn't he???

 

BTW, so far this seems to be an excellent solution to my problem, and it must be the reason the '02's have the one piece shaft in them...

Yeah.  I think it took him a few months to get it all worked out, but got a little nicer truck at no extra cost to him.  :D

Wow! I had no idea the 2500's had Two Piece drive shafts!

The 01's had them.  I don't know which models had them, but obviously the crewcabs did.  The '02 crews have this bigass Aluminum shaft  ;)

Could you explain the "shudder" some more?  I have a noise coming from underneath my '02 Crew Cab short bed with the 2-piece drive shaft.  It sounds like someone knocking on the underside when accelerating across a rough surface.  I can even feel it through the floor board.  If I let off the throttle it goes away which tells me it has something to do with torque caused by acceleration.  I also hear it if I hit a big bump even if I'm not accelerating.  I do NOT hear it if I'm on a real smooth surface.  I have ruled out slapping leaf springs or loose shocks and I've looked over the underside and checked all the nuts and bolts and can get to to make sure they are tight.  Could it be play in the carrier bearing housing?  Any other ideas?

I have a 2000 2500 silverado ext cab that came from factory with a one piece drive shaft :ooh: I wonder why some came with a two piece :O

The '02 crews have this bigass Aluminum shaft  ;)

My '02 4x4 HD crew cab came with the 2 piece. :)

 

Need to get a 1 piece, as my truck does have the takeoff shudder.

Hutch,  It was a seat of the pants feeling.  You culd feel a vibration under your butt when you took off at moderate acceleration.  It was a "shudder" type vibration and wasn't always noticable...  A couple of times it was violent enough that I could get some "slap" out of the rear springs.

 

The carrier bearing is mounted in a rubber shell, and as torque is applied to the drivetrain the driveshaft will begin to oscillate in this rubber mounted bearing.  It is worse on harder acceleration, and when towing/hauling...

 

Now that I have a new driveshaft it surprises me at how smooth the truck will "launch".

Hutch, don't know of this helps, but I noticed w/ relative's 2-piece, that the "shudder" was at the very first application of the throttle for a second or 2, and it got worse both in duration and intensity, at least in the case I'm mentioning, when the truck was pulling or hauling a load, ie - 5th wheel.  This was to the point that the IP shook violently!  The 1-piece cured it completely.

 

There is a separate issue with spring slapping when hitting irregularities, but this can occur independently from accelerating or not, but sounds like you've ruled that out.

 

The seat of the pants shake/vibration description by Shaners is exactly right.

I have a two piece drive shaft on my 2002 GMC 2500HD, extended cab, short bed, two wheel drive. I had a similar problem, but it was a "klunk" noise when I would first excellerate. It went to the dealer three times. They did a number of things like lubricating the splines, adjusting the srings, etc, etc, etc. It is much better now, but not perfect. When I tow my fifth wheel, I don't have the problem. Just a comment.

    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
