Fuel Guage

Has anyone encountered a fuel guage that fluctuates when the tank has been filled or at 1/2 tank? My truck has started doing this in the past year, I checked all the connections but have not found the problem. It's anoying but since I know when I filled it by resetting the trip meter I can be sure I don't run out!

I think it is a faulty sending unit in the tank but thought someone might have a quick fix without removing the tank............

It's a very common problem. You could try some Techron or GM fuel injector cleaner. They are formulated to clean sending units damaged by sulphur in the fuel. If a few tankfulls doesn't do it, you might as well replace the fuel pump sending unit assembly. If you haven't replaced the fuel pump yet it will be due soon anyways. The easiest way to do it is to remove the whole truck bed.

Mine is on the fritz as well. Mainly when I start the engine in the morning or when I fill her up at the station.

I really don't want to replace the pump/sender unit...what a pain in the arse. And why would pulling off the bed be the easiest thing to do? That would be incredibly difficult. for one all the mounts are probably rusted to hell, and then once you get it off it weighs what, 700 lbs? sheesh...

Then, I don't buy how it can be put back on just as even and straight as it was before. Just too many problems with this.

I have a 2000 2500 silverado extended cab shortbed and I recently changed my fuel pump. The easiest way is to get a half inch impact and take out the bolts holding the bed on. Two guys can easily pull the bed off. Mine had 8 bolts holding the bed on, two electical plug ins for the tail lights and three 8mm bolts holding the fuel neck onto the bed. Then the top of the tank is exposed and super easy to work on. You can do it without an impact but it saves alot of time. For realigning the bed, you can tell when it is right because the old dirt and rust lines line up.
