Help!.. Resonating Muffler Or Air-intake, You Tell Me?

I have a 2002 GM Yukon with Gibson exhaust and K&N air intake! I get that annoying resonating in the cab when going thru the gears. It sounds like it's coming from the engine compartment? Any ideas? I thought maybe a closed box type of intake may take away the resination?

I noticed a definite growl from under the hood when I had my K&N FIPKII on. Got quieter when I put the oem back on. I had a tad of resonance with my Borla too but I did a sound insulation project on the interior many years ago and that resolved it. The problem is that with the SUVs, you basically have a large resonance box which amplifies the sound to some extent. I think the only way to tell which is causing it for sure would be to go back to stock on the air box and see what it sounds like.

My dads 06 yukon has a bad exhaust resonance. Really annoying i find but its just the stock exhaust. In his case it happens as you take off only at a certain rpm it seems. Good luck fixing it.

Strictly, I had a droning, in the cab, coming from both, my flowmaster muffler, and my wife complaining about the droning muffler. in order to quiet them both down.

I went to home hardware in Beautiful downtown Essex, and grabbed two 3/8x6" long springs and a roll of mechanics wire.

I then cut two lengths of wire about 8" shorter than the circumference of the muffler, looped both ends, hooked one end onto the spring then wrapped them both around the muffler, stretched the spring and hooked it to the looped wire. It took all of 5 minutes. The noise reduction was a huge difference.

Now, mama Ward doesn't have to ride in the back.

In my opinion I would go back to the stock box as it draws cold air from the fender, totally isolated from the warm air of the engine compartment, just keep the free flowing filter.

Take care good luck Ward

Thanks Ward, basically are you tightening things up a bit by doing this?

Yes some what, with all the exhaust impulse flowing through the muffler, it seemed the muffler was acting as a

speaker, meaning excessive vibration. By holding that vibration down to a minimum... the droning is reduced.

I just thought about the brake shops, when they wrap a strap around a brake drum, to reduce they squeal and vibration.

Its working for me so far.

Is this wrapping a heat shield in addition to the muffler? Or have you simply wrapped the muffler? Is Mechanic tape the same as perferated plumbers tape??

I recently installed a flowmaster 50 and KN air intake, the drone sound in cab was pretty bad...i had them installed a resonator (pipe about 1ft long) between the muffler and exhaust ends...it works well and cost about 60 bucks for installing the resonator. Maybe you can check it out at your local shop.
