Before I start please do not turn this thread into another 'which oil filter brand is better' thread. Thanks.

Is anyone using a larger filter with the 5.3L V8's? Maybe I'm just used to running a very large filter on my Jeep's 4.0L engine, but when I crawled under my "new to me" '03 Silverado Z71 and looked at the filter I had to double check and make sure the dealer I'd bought it from didn't use a small lawn tractor engine filter. Heck, my Simplicity Ride on lawn mower (23hp Kohler) filter is bigger than the one thats on there.

So I guess my question is is anyone using a larger filter? Because when it comes to oil filtration, bigger is better (among some other things)...

Do you have a brand/part number for the larger filter?

That'd be what I'm looking for. Trying to see who's running what.

Unfortunately the two people that voted for the larger filter didn't reply like I'd hoped... :D :: :rolleyes:

You may want to try looking at the WIX website for an alternative size. They list engineering specs so you can compare alternatives. If size is important to you, be careful of the filters sold at discount stores (you know, brand "F"). Their size for both my Liberty diesel and 97 Chevy truck were almost an inch shorter than OEM or WIX/Napa products. Unfortunately you won't notice the difference until the old oil & filter are in the drain pan.

Well, using a cheap filter wouldn't be a problem. I ONLY use K&N Gold Oil Filters on all my rigs. I buy them in bulk and save a ton on them. I was trying to figure out what people are running for a larger filter and then find K&N's version. But again, lets please not make this a brand war.

Unfortunately the people that voted for the larger filters where either just throwing down votes without actually running a larger filter, or just didn't care to respond. Oh well, I guess I'll figure it out on my own.

Thanks for the info on the WIX site, I'll check it out (although, never run their filter).

If you find an alternative, please post it. Could someone in the GM world comment on what a non-stock filter does to your warrenty?

I sure will.

As for the warranty I doubt anything. That'd be like saying that you would have to run the GM Branded filter for the entirety. I have a lot left on my warranty and I think they'd be hard pressed to prove that caused any issues.

The ST3675 is the largest filter that I found to fit. It is the Wal-Mart brand Super Tech. Don't know if you can cross that with the K&N or not. One that is similar in size is the AMSOIL EaO30 but it does not have a Drainback valve. I run the EaO64 which is just a tadd shorter.

Hmmm, this would be good to know, I would prefer a delco or puralator... I'm due for an oil change in around 700 miles.

I run the larger filter, the first time the auto parts store gave me the little one.. I told em what the hell is this? Ive got a bigger one on my snapper push mower. I forget the part number.

Theres no reason not to run the bigger one, its about the same in price and doesnt make it harder to get damaged under the vehicle

Wouldn't want to crawl under and look would ya? :shakehead: Most oil filters (at least good ones) have the part number right on them. Thanks!

Legally, a manufacturer can void a warrenty for running a different brand oil filter, but if that is their policy, then it would have to be stated in the disclaimer of the warrenty and they are also required by law to give you their filter free of charge.

Wix 51522 is larger and includes the recommended anti-drainback valve. It's similar in size to the now obsolete AC-Delco PF-59, I've been running the Wix since new.
