Getting To The Horn

OK I feel like an idiot for asking this but my momma says there ain't no stupid questions just stupid people (me)

I have purchased a wolo airhorn kit and I want to replace my current setup .

How can I get to the actual OEM horns on either side? I couldn't get at them from below or above I took off the battery and the tray and still couldn't reach it. I was looking in my Haynes manual and their picture shows access to it clear as day, but mine doesn't look like that!

Do I have to remove the plastic fender well and are those tabs reusable?? Any ideas? I don't really want to leave the stock ones on I would like to remove them and use the mounting point for the the compressor.

thanks!

Not too sure about the 04's but, on my 99 it looked darn near impossible to get to the one on the drivers side. You probably won't be able to use that side for mounting anything anyways. Best thing to do is to mount you new kit in behind the grill or on the passenger side fender well behind the Radiator Reservoir.

As for locations:

Drivers side:

if you take your headlight out and your turn signal out you'll see the horn sitting behind a brace right behind where your turn signal is mounted. You should be able to disconnect it from there.

Passenger Side:

You could probably mount part of your horns on this side as it is very easy to work on this side.

Remove your Air box and you'll find the horn underneath your Airbox. You should be able to wire the horn to the factory wiring as GM has already provided a Relay for the Horn in the Factory Setup.

I actually ended up leaving the Drivers side one in and in use as I added 2 more horns on the passenger side. The Original passenger side one had died so I added 2 horns from a 1978 Buick Park Avenue. So when I hit the horns 3 horns blare pretty loudly at idiots on the road.

Good luck.

I just wired up my train horns on my truck and was going to wire them directly to the stock horn but glad i didnt! I put in a seperate button in that controls them and the stock horn button on steering wheel controls factory "little horn" lol. once you start tapping into stock wiring for something like horns, you are risking poppingthe fuse...

My setup controls the valve "actuator" for the air and i have the switch powered off of a add a fuse in the fuse box, and fused it at 5amps.

Is your wolo kit powered by a compressor / air tank??

why not just switch in a bigger fuse?

Because a fuse's job is to protect the wiring, not your accessories. If you put in a larger fuse you are risking starting a fire by allowing the wiring to be overloaded. Bad idea.

exactly, a fuse in your vehicle works the same way as in your house... its better to have a smaller fuse that will pop if there a problem in the line (heat) than for the wire to melt and burn down your truck / house.

As for suggestions on how to hook up horns, it all depends on what type of horns you get. Most complete setups will come with detailed instructions on how to hook everything up. Most importantly hooking up the relays correctly so you dont have a compressor running when your vehicle is off (should you have a leak). What i would suggest is what ever kit or setup you go with , call / email the company prior to buying it and ask for a copy of the instructions fo you know exactly what your getting into, and if it will work with your vehicle.

I took the fan shroud off and then removed the headlight to get to it. It was a reach but i made it.
