Gas Tank Replacement

Recommended Posts

Howdy gang. Well, it would figure, just as I need a new inspection sticker, my driver's side gas tank leaks (when I fill it up).

I bought the tank already (Spectra autoparts) and straps and new installation hardware.

How big of a job is this? Tank is almost drained, gauge is just below the empty mark. Will I need one of the fuel disconnect tools?

Any suggestions?

Thanks all.

Pretty easy job. I just put a floor jack under center of tank with a 18" or so long piece of 2"x 10" to spread weight out. Remove the 6 strap nuts on inside of frame rail and slowly let it down. As soon as you can get your hand up on top of tank do it and unplug wires and remove fuel lines....don't think you need a fuel line disconnect on this vintage truck, but could pick one up just in case, their like $3. I would swap in a new sending unit while your there for extra insurance.

Sounds easy enough. I will have a buddy help me lower it down when I get it to that point. It is an '87 which is the first year for the TBI, so I was wondering if I would need that fuel disconnect. I have one handy just in case. Sending unit still works fine. Can see the level in the tank go up and down when the truck accelerates or brakes.

Thanks! :)

Always makes me nervous to drop a gas tank. Don't forget to disconnect the battery before doing any work.
