So, what do you think?

I got my painted intake cover installed and here it is.  The ribs on top have 1/8 inch wide silver pin striping on them, as does the air cleaner lid but it's not painted red.  I may replace it with K&N Gen II somtime this Summer.  The colored lettering was done with a Testors paint pen.  Some of the pics look kinda bad, but the digital camera I used doesn't have a very high resolution.

Thanks guys.

To be honest, I havn't done any serious off roading.  I've only played around in some deep mud twice, the last time in November.  Here is South Carolina the mud is more like a red clay/sandy type (in most places near me) that is a b*tch to clean up.  It stains stuff a little too.  I've still got that red clay/sand stuff coming out of cracks and corners when I wash it.  I do wash the engine compartment about twice a year, and right after I played in the mud.  After it's clean, I usually spray some armor all on all the plastic an hoses to keep them fairly clean.    The weather here is ususally great.  If anything it rains and we might get one or two days of snow every year or two, but they don't use salt here, so thats not a problem.

First, don't spray any water on a hot engine.  You don't want to crack anything.

What I do is cover the alternator and plug wires with some aluminium foil.  I use that because it's easy to shape and work with.  If it's really greasy/muddy/dirty I spray some cleaner like Castrol Superclean, engine degreaser, or something similar on the worst spots.  If it's not too dirty, just mist it with the hose.  Then I take a soft bristled brush with a handle on it and dip it into the soapy water I used to wash the truck with and just kinda scrub over everything.  You just want to be careful not to directly spray any electrical stuff or things you think shouldn't get too wet.  I don't use high pressure either.  I have one of those hose nozzles that has different spray settings and I usually use the shower and mist settings.

I only do it a couple time a year, at the most, and it doesn't take but about 5 min.  If I'm in a hurry, I'll dry off what I can easily reach.  After everything has time to dry, I spray some Armor All on a rag and hit all the hoses and plastic.

Hope this helps.

I did the same thing to my '91 when I had it.  This picture was taken when the truck was about 5 or 6 years old.  It was easier to clean though compared to the new models.
