Cancel Factory Order

If I need to cancel a factory order on a 2007 Sierra, should I expect any penalties from dealer? The truck isn't built yet. I put $1000 down.

You shouldn't. I bailed on a factory order for a 2006 Trailblazer SS just as it was showing up at the lot and I got my deposit back.

Check the paperwork that you signed: it should give a cancellation policy. If not, your state's consumer info web site or GM's web site may tell you. In general the dealer wants your business and if they keep your money you will likely never go back. However, whatever you ordered has to be reasonably saleable--which is likely if you wanted to buy it in the first place. I could imagine that if you lived in the Mississippi delta or someplace equivilently hot and humid and ordered an a/c delete truck they might give you a hard time.

 

The lore from the late sixties was that if you ordered a factory track-only race car you owned it, but I think they made you pay full price up front and the car was usually not titled and illegal to register because of the factory racing mods. A childhood friend's father ordered a car from the factory with all the racing equipment without ordering the racing package. When he went to register it at first they refused, then stamped on the front of the registration "Revoke registration if caught speeding." He says he was never caught, and I believe him as he still had the paper.
