How Much For A Catalytic Converter ?!

Recommended Posts

Well, replacing the O2 sensors really helped with the performance and mileage, but I still have the 'Service Engine Soon' light.

Turns out to be a P0420 code. I was told it's most likey a plugged cat.

OK, I ask how much?? (I figured less than $100)

Not quite... Over $300 !!! Holy big bucks Batman !!!

The truck is a 2000 GMC Jimmy, 4.3 Vortec, 5 speed 4X4.

Anyone have any suggestions for a cheaper replacment? (besides gutting it out, I've already thought about just doing that)

Thanks.

You could probably get one for around $150, but as far as I know it wouldn't be OBDII compliant. An OBDI cat will still do the job. I'll refrain from detailing the legalities though you may want to find a shop that works with discretion.

I ran nitrous on my '99 s10 4.3L. My catalytic converter literally melted shut. I was dealing with CA smog laws too but at the time couldn't afford the OBDII compliant cat, so I just had the shop weld in a cheap OBDI replacement. It did the job and I just crossed my fingers that the smog tech would be a little lax in the visual inspection.

$150 sound a bit better. Thanks.

Luckily, the county I live in doesn't have emission tests, so I'm not too concerned about that, but it does have to atleast have a cat inplace, seeing as there was one on there from the factory.

Anyone know if there is some kind of 'Hi-flo' cat? The guy at the parts store mentioned something about it, but wouldn't elaborate?

what kind of milage do you have on it. 8 yr or 80,000 mile warranty on the cats.

Well, got the 80K mi beat, it's about 105K

You can get Magnaflow aka CarSound OBD2 cats for under $100 bucks.

That's more what I'm lookin' for, but after checking the Magnaflow site,

they don't list anything above the 2.8L, 6 cyl? (except for California model)

Do you happen to know a part number by chance?

EDIT: I did find one for $148, but it's for '92-'94 ????

Well, the local shop had one universal Magnaflow, less than $75  not including any clamps/adaptors I might still need.

Thanks again guys
