Serpentine Belt Deflection

Recommended Posts

I've been having a problem with random ticking and clicking that an old school mechanic believes is coming from the belt/pulley system.

I took a look at the serpentine belt, but there does appear to be a good bit of deflection in the belt. How much deflection is accetpable? Also, would this be an indication that the tensioner is shot as well?

Thanks!

There is a little nub on the tensioner that should be in between two lines on the unmoveable part of the tensioner. Changing it is pretty straightforward.

I'll go take a look at that.

I can twist the belt 180 degrees by hand so I'm assuming that is not good. Should the tensioner be replaced at the same time?

Also, would a lose belt cause pulleys to click or tick?

You can usually get the tensioner and pulley as one assy, (or separately, and put them together). I'm not sure about your engine, but there is usually an idler pulley too. Just sitting by itself. It would be a good idea to change that too. The clicking is probably bearings in one of the pulleys.

One more question on the clicking ...

When I quickly step on the gas the clicking seems to subsite. THe clicking is gone until the truck idles down then it returns.

Would this be a characteristic of a bearing that is clicking?

Also. with only 12,000 miles on it would this even be a problem?

There are a couple of noises in the 4.8L engine that are normal. There is a rythmic clicking at idle which is most noticeable when parked next to a concrete wall (like in a fast food drive-thru). It sounds bad but is normal. There's also a rattling sound which is the injectors cycling. I have almost 60,000 miles on mine and these two noises have been there since mile 1. No problems at all with the truck so far.

With only 12000 mi on it what year is it 3 years & 36000mi is the bumper to bumper warrenty.

It's now been at the dealer several times for the clicking under warranty. They've replaced the lifters then the lifters, camshaft and oil pump all to no avail.

I still have yet to tackle the tensioner and idle pulley. Is there any chance it would be a simple fix like that.

I also remember reading about the grade of oil maybe lessening the ticking. I'm running 5W-30 - would changing to 10W-30 possiblly help? Also, I've used M1 in the past, what is a good thicker oil?

Thanks again!
