Out of no where my console dings at me and the message "Service 4WD" pops up. What does that mean? I've been gone for 8 days and haven't driven the truck in at least 10 days (until yesterday when this happened). I've only offroaded once and it would probably be a 2-3 on a scale of 10. That was even about 3-4 months ago. It popped up yesterday, I put the truck in auto 4wd and back into 2wd with no problems. Today - nothing. My friend said that his truck ('03 chevy z71) did the same thing when he first got it and it never came up again. But now when he tries to put his truck in anything but 2wd you can hear this grinding noise.

Anything I should do or check?

Do you normally drive around in auto 4x4...I have heard some people that never take it out of auto 4x4 and to me that's just rediculous. Try checking out your transfer case for fluid level.

its probably the selector switch. it will most likely start to happen more often. mine did it for two years until i replaced the switch. many here have the problem.

mine does that...i do leave it in auto sometimes..because it came that way, lol.. i took it in once and was told a switch underneath was disconnected..they connected it and it quit..it has started again..

no lights when in 2wd, but as soon as it's in auto it's back on...never tried in 4wd.

i do, however, have probs with the vehicle shifiting at times.. sometimes it shifts really hard out of 1st..sometimes it won't move from a dead start...99.99997% of the time it works fine, except for the service msg...

two issues--i have a superchips program--driving with that removed to eliminate that as a cause and also, waiting until the shifting problems start again to see if they can be mimicked at the dealer..

i wonder if the superchips could be the root of the shifting problem??..so trying to take that out of the loop..

My truck had the same problem and I read here that the selector switch could be the culprit. There was an issue with bad solder joints. I took it out and resoldered the pins on the back of the switch and this fixed the issue.

Definately the 4wd switch. Mine did the same thing, I replaced the switch, never had the service 4wd light come on again.
