Personally i would definitely not do that. But then again it might give the effect of alot of the cold air intake kits on the market.

Open element filters like the K & N are basically the same thing.. I know id be putting it back on when I went mud riding though..

I would not do that. The stock system design is to draw air up thru the pleats of the filter. Taking the cover off, to me, would seem to disrupt this flow causing turbulence from the air coming in the duct and the air coming thru the top (metal grid side) of the filter. This seems like it could keep the debris floating around in the box. What keeps the filter in the box with the cover removed?

okay thanks guys, i just wanted a reality check, i knew that the top was supposed to stay on cuz i thought the box was designed to draw air up, and as for what he used to keep the filter in... double sided tape :shakehead: anyways thanks for the comments just wanted to make sure i wasnt losin it!!

With the lid off, how does he still pull air thru the filter? You meak he is just drawing raw air into the engine?

The path the air takes is from b elow the filter, thru the filter and then into the engine. The lid makes the seal between the engine side of the filter and the intake tube going into the TB.

People confuse the sound of the increase of intake air with more power. Depending on the year of vehicle, the air filter assembly might already be a "cold air" intake since it's totally enclosed and draws fresh air from the fender opening rather than the engine compartment.

Well, ya know that if he put an "Airbox Lid Removed" sticker on his truck, he has got to be making more power !!!

so much power it's scary!

Taking off the cover allows hot engine compartment air in and less HP & with cover on it draws cold ait from outside & MORE HP.

Cold air intake kits are not that expensive, why rig your truck like that? Maybe the guy who owned my truck before me did that. It would explain all the corn I found at the bottom of the airbox when I removed it...

Those "gains" he is feeling at that range is probably measured from a butt dyno. It gets louder due to less sound resonance. Keep it on. Otherwise invest in a CAI.
