Oil Dipstick Showing Nothing?!?! Ticking Returns ...

Recommended Posts

Hello All!

Last Monday I picked up my truck from the dealer - the lifters were replaced under warranty as they were determined to be the source of the ticking. Well, this week the ticking returned. Now it's on startup and when the motor idles down.

I changed the oil and put in 6 quarts of Mobil 1 in an effort to stop the ticking. When I went to reinsert the dipstick I had to fight it the whole way in (I never had to before) and it came up showing NOTHING on it.

I've changed oil more times than I care to remember and have never encountered something like this.

Any thoughts?

THanks!

Is it possible you broke the tube the dipstick follows or maybe it rusted and broke from using it too much? Anythings possible nowadays. Make sure its completly in tact to the motor. Not much else I can think of.

I suppose anything is possible. I really do have to work the dipstick to get it back in the tube. I didn't have this problem before.

I just checked and the tube is intact to the motor. There is a part number on the dipstick - can anybody with a 4.8 provide their part number so I can make sure it's correct?

This is annoying.

That is an odd one...................any chance your truck has some sort of high capacity oil pan?? or you've got the wrong dip stick......good luck and keep us posted..... :driving:

Turns out that I have the wrong dipstick. I called the GM dealer and gave them the last 8 digits of my VIN and they checked for me. My new one will be in on Monday.

Now .... I have in between 6 to 7 quarts of oil in the truck. Should I drop the filter and get rid of some or just let things go until Monday when I can actually determine how much oil is in the pan?

I personally wouldn't drive it until I knew how much oil was in the engine.
