Rear View Mirror Upgade?

Recommended Posts

I was just looking on Ebay and saw a couple of rear view mirrors with the compass/temp gauge in them, it would be nice to have that. I was wondering what is involved with wiring and such for the installation. There's got to be a temp monitor mounted outside the cab, is the compass included with the same gauge? what about new wire harnasses? What do you all think? I have a 2001 ext. cab-victory red of course.

Use the search function. This has been written up before. I wrote it up for my 2000 but it is the old body style and different from yours.

I checked all around with the search feature, no luck any help finding that post would be a great help. What do you mean by old body style on a 2000?

Thanks for the info. I did look around and found some other good sites-

in addition to the one you gave me. After reading all that I bought one off Ebay with Temp/compass for $25.oo, now I'll have to get some wires when it comes. Anybody that has done, this a few hints would be great and any advice is welcome(along with part numbers! :eek: ) Thanks again

It might be better to get an aftermarket mirror or temp/compass system. They sell some that have wireless sensors and give you all kinds of stuff - like indoor and outdoor temps, direction, altitude, etc.

JPCustoms.com has a kit. Otherwise you'll want to get a Donnelly mirror kit.

2001 should have the harness with connector tucked up in the headliner already.

To complete the temperature sensor;

1. underhood electrical center, remove main housing cover

2. find airbag front sensor metripack connector, 2 position. Only one wire to airbag sensor.

3. run temp sensor wire from front behind bumper to the airbag connector.

4. open side of the airbag connector is the temp wire back to the mirror.

It's a Metripack 150 connector, but I have forgotten if it's male or female. Available at Pep Boys.

It's in and I can't stop staring at the mirror, now my wife is driving me crazy telling me the direction! It was super simple to install. I found a guy on ebay who sold the harness for the mirror after calling around with no luck. Overall it cost me $70.00 for the mirror (comp/temp/auto-dim) and wires compared to the $249.00 from the gentex/mito website (http://www.mitocorp.com/flash/nightvisions...mingmirrors.htm). It took around 1 1/2 hours and I went slow. The hardest part was running the temp wire thru the firewall. I was actually surprised how good it went, when I called the dealer he made it sound like it was a MAJOR undertaking. Thanks to all with the good advice in the previous threads
