New Stereo Equipment Help

I'm looking to upgrade the sound system in my truck. I'm looking to get a new head unit that supports an easy ipod hookup, as well as have front, rear, and sub RCA hookups. I'd also like to have a dvd player, but I don't want one that has to have the screen up if you're not watching a video. Are there any headunits that are the oversized to fit the whole stereo hole, ar am I just going to have to deal with the ugly, half-assed look of the adapter bracket?

 

Also, I was wondering what are the biggest speakers I can fit in the door panels and still have them be concealed? I saw wingnutt's thread with 6x9's in the front doors, how much fabricating was needed to mount the speakers?
