2004 Sierra With The Wrong Engine

Alright, first post, and (at least to me) it's a head scratcher. I have a 2004 GMC Sierra, that I purchased used in 2006. The truck was originaly purchased in the fall of 2003. This weekend I had a oveheating problem. I went to the local parts store to get a ne thermostat. He did not stock it. So I went to the GMC dealer, they did not stock it, but the Chevy dealer 25 miles away had the t-stat, and another dealer 20 miles in the other direction had the gasket. After all of that I take the t-stat off of the truck, and they are not the same. I brought the original t-stat to the GMC dealer in town, and they told me it was off a 5.3L engine. My VIN, RPO Code and Catylist Tag all say 4.8L. Any ideas?

what is the part # on the t-stat

The Thermostat GM sold me for a 2004 4.8L was a 12581595 (T-Stat), and a 12570307 (Seal). Those did not match what I took out of the truck. When I went back to the locak GMC dealer, the shop manager told me the thermostat I had must have come out of a 5.3L, because of its design. The GMC dealer did not stock the 5.3L thermostat either, so I picked up a Stant at the local parts store. The Stant # is 14298.

The one off the truck is a compleate housing with the thermostat presssed in to it. The one GM sold me was a individual thermostat and gasket. There was no way the one GM had woud work.

The t-stat should pop out of it. If not then go to the dealer and get this part # 12571261 it is the t-stat housing and t-stat. It cost 44.05

The T-Stat was removable from the housing, but the new T-stat would not fit in the hosuing. I already got the replacement Housing and t-stat combo, but it is for a 5.3L motor, not a 4.8. The part # youreferenced, is it for a 5.3 or 4.8?
