the factory dvd navigation unit in the nbs , can you watch dvd's on them? and if so, can you use it watching dvd's while driving? thanks!

Watching DVD's in front is illegal in (I believe) all states. For that reason alone I think you'll find that DVD's won't play on the head unit.

I do know that the earlier models (mine is an '04 TNR) it will not play movie format DVDs.

On my 07' Silverado NBS w/ the DVD/Navi option, the head unit will display the movie if the transmission is in "Park". As soon as you shift it into gear, movie shuts off on the head unit and you can only view it from the overhead rear display.

I have an 07' Sierra Denali and my CD/DVD/Nav will play DVD's up front but only while the transmission is in park. As H8RADAR said, when you shift into drive you can only see the movie on the flip down screen of the rear entertainment center. GM doesn't want to run the risk of having thier customers involved in accidents viewing movies while driving. Most, if not all DVD capable head units, factory installed or aftermarket are set up this way to protect you the driver and themselves from a lawsuit but there are ways around this feature.

a buddy of mine that works at a sound system shop told me once that he sells a module that can be installed to get around this on the factory GM DVD/Nav systems. It fools the trucks computer or whatever into thinking that it is still in park when in the DVD mode. So you can watch movies up front while driving. It only works for the DVD portion though. You still won't be able to enter street info's when in Nav mode and underway. It is also pretty pricey. Some where around $600.00 for the module alone. Let me know if you are interested and i'll find out what the make and model of the module is.

Just recently I added a nav dvd HU to my 07 sierra slt cc nbs. I changed from a factory bose cd radio w/ no navigation so I have experience in this area. You can play dvd's on a nav HU if you have a dvd nav HU, I know it sounds simple. If you have a Rear seat entertainment system then you will have a dvd HU, if you do not have a RSE then you will not have a dvd HU. You can also tell by looking at the nav unit itself, it will have the DVD symbol.

They are also correct in saying that you can only view dvd's while in park. There are units that bypass that feature, one is a GM LOCKPICK by coastal electronics and another is avaliable from jpcustoms.com. They sell for around $300. Hopefully this makes sense and help, if not write back and I will try and explain.

The new DVD players that come from the factory in the new chevys may be different from aftermarket ones. But i had a dvd player installed about a week ago, and ive known the guy who did it for me for a while, and he said that there is just a wire that connects somewhere in the dash that only lets it play in park. But he told me that all he does is ground the wire to the frame or somewhere else metal. Im not exactly sure how hard the wire is to find once its in there. But all i know is I watch movies when i drive

Sorry to post on this thread but it won't let me start a new one for some reason. After reading 200 posts in 15 different threads, it's still not clear which parts I need for a NAV upgrade on my NBS 2007 Silverado Ext cab 1500 w/LT1 package. In other words, no BOSE, no LUX. It just has the CD radio that came with the LT1 pack. ANy help appreciated. Thanks

I have a nbs 2500 hd with nav and bose audio No factory DVD. Is there a way to play DVD's in the Nav. disc slot? The Nav disc is a DVD format so I'm thinking there must be a way to watch DVD's. Probably have to buy some kind of module. I have tried to put in a DVD and it tells me I must insert the Nav disc.

:) Thanks

Have you tried to use the regular CD slot, that is where it goes, not the DVD Nav slot?

On a side note, I am trying to get a group buy for the GM Lockpick together over at DenaliTrucks Heres the link...
