4wd Not Working

Well i was helping the grandfather in law move some stuff around his land and needed some extra traction.

I dropped the transmission to neautral and hit the 4wd high button on the dash. The button starts to blink....and blink....and blink...and blink. I put the truck in drive to see if it needed to be in gear...and it still keeps just blinking.

After waiting a few minutes i try low. I hear several loud clunks like the tranny is engaging and i notice that i have alot more torque. That is, when i put the truck in drive i had to push harder on the brake to stay stationary.

The whole problem through all of this is that the light is still blinking the whole time. Pretty much the front is not engaging.

That is alot of rambling...let me try and simplify it...heh.

I hit the button, button just keeps blinking. I hear several clunks from the drivetrain, but the front diff i guess is not engaging. When i push the 2wd button i hear another clunk and the truck drives just fine no issues.

Now i am not a seasoned off roader, nor do i know much about 4x4 operation. I do know the basics however.

So any suggestions on what could be wrong? I am sure i left information out so if i did just let me know.

You can try moving about 5 mph then try 4 hi, and about 3 mph for 4 low (still in drive). I have had some trouble similar to you on occasion and this usually solves it. Hope this helps a little.

My GF ran over a skateboard on the road while I was following her the other day, caught red handed. Apparently she was trying to answer her phone and didn't see it. Anyway, the point is that the skateboard came up and hit the front axle actuator and busted it right off, what luck. I disconnected it so it's not hanging there and now when you push 4wd it just keeps blinking.

I would look at that, I've read it's a common problem on the older trucks too because they used a poor design before. I think you can replace what you have or upgrade to a better type, like you one my GF busted.

My truck did this once. I followed the wires up from the front diff...turns out a squirrel or something had gotten in under the electrical center under the hood and chewed several of the wires (airbag wires too). 30 minutes with the soldering iron and she was good to go.
