Gas Cap

i got out of work yesterday and started up my truck and my check engine light came on i drove home cause its 2am and no ones going to pick me up. i think to check my gas cap this morning and i take it out and put it back in and the light goes off. this is after burning 3/4 or tank over the past week and a half. i was just wondering if the gas cap had losen off when driving the gravel road or somone from work had screwed with my cap. so i was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else like the cap lossening off or anything?

I very much doubt it would loosen on it's own if it was corretly tightened.

Was the last fill-up recent? The check engine light should come on right away if the cap is loose so if you noticed the light just after a fill-up then could be it was not tightened then.

Otherwise I would say someone loosened it.

Loose cap will certainly trigger tha light. Mine took about 25 miles to do that when I left it loose after a fillup. Good thing is... It's likely that your problem is solved.

Seems to be worried about why it was loose in the first place and I would be too.

I'd be wondering if someone was either trying to syphon gas out of peoples tanks or if you have someone that wants to F___ w/ you and put something in your tank.

Locking gas caps are cheap although it's one more key on the key-ring.

I had an aftermarket locking cap, and when I bought it the dummy who sold it to me gave me the wrong one, it went on, but there was a little gap at the bottom and it wasnt sealing right, so i put my stock one back one. Although when my cap wasnt on right my engine light didnt come on, it just made the dinging noise like when your door is open, and it said check fuel cap on the message part of the dash. So yeah at least in my 04 the engine light doesnt come on when my cap isnt on right. but yours may be different.

With all of the sensors that new vehicles have now, it's impossible to say what set off your CEL. You could take it to your favorite dealership or parts house that has the capability to plug in a scanner and narrow down the source...

Since you went through some high water, maybe your ABS sensors got wet?

If you end up planning to take it in, Id buy a DTC reader before you do. I think you can get them for around 40 bucks at most auto parts stores. Even if its covered by warranty ( not sure if it is or isnt), becuase theyre nice to have and theyre realitivly inexpensive, and next time your light comes on you might be able to save yourself a trip to the dealership. Just a thought.

I agree with those above... Sounds like the problem might be a little deeper than tha loose gas cap theory might have suggested. Have you pulled the code to see what the system is telling you?

no ...i dont have a code scanner so i have no idea what it is ... i'm gonna try to get someone to throw one on it tho .... one guy i know said maybe 02 sensor
