Backspacing?

Alright well Im looking into getting some new wheels. And basically I want them to stick out as far as I can get them, and I dont want wheels spacers lol ( I just sold mine). And Ive been looking online, and Ive seen backspacing of 3"...4"...3.5" and so on. And Im just not sure which ones would stick out further becuase ive been told by one guy, its the measurment from the outside part of the rim to the middle, and then i was told it was from the inside part of the rim to the middle. So can anyone clear this up for me. and tell me where and how its measured..and if the littler the number means more wheel sticking out or not. Thanks guys

The backspace is the distance from the inside surface of the center to the inside rim lip.

Alrighty thanks..so the smaller the backspacing the more the wheel will stick out..right?

If you place a bare wheel on the floor face up... the distance from the floor to the hub mounting surface is the back spacing. Less back space means the wheel will "stick out" further.

if you see it saying like a +40mm or a -20mm ... what that is ... is from the center of the rim (10" rim .. 5" is the center) .. the mounting plate is either +40mm to the outside of the rim .. or -20mm to the inside.

You are correct.

 

It indicates the positive or negative offset of the wheel. It's especially helpful if you are ordering from a catalog. For example my 20x9 inch wheels are +30 (positive offset) and they fill the wheelwells without sticking out from under the fender lip. (important on new body GM trucks) Nothing looks worse than a set of wheels that look like they are meant for "something else".
