Black Powder Coat Stainless Steel Brush Guard

Recommended Posts

Well, like the title says, does any one know of any manufacturers that offer a black powder coat brush guard in 316 SS (or any stainless for that matter)? I've been looking around a bit and it seems that you can only get stainless in the chrome or polished finishes. Here in the rust belt I'm a bit hesitant about getting something in a plain carbon steel.

Everything we ever sold in stainless was either brushed or polished. From what I've heard the stainless doesn't take paint or powdercoat very well. (Somebody out there might be able to clear that up?) If you can find a powdercoating biz that will tackle it why not buy one you like and have it coated? Just a thought.

Hmm, ok. Thanks for the info. I may have to go the route of getting a set of polished ones and getting them powder coated on my own. Westin makes a set of SS black powder coat tubular side steps that I put on my truck this spring. Since they're SS they've got a lifetime warrenty. I'm just a bit confused as to why they would offer the SS for their side steps and not the grill guards.

Must admit. That's a darn good question. Are you sure they are SS and powdercoated? If so I can't begin to understand why a grille guard couldn't be had as well. Maybe an email to Westin....

If you are going to get one and want to get it powder coated, the brushed would be better, would help hold it on better than the polished...

Someone should be able to do it, just have to preheat it a bit, and shoot it and run it through the oven.... we shoot aluminum all the time, and have done some stainless so I know it can be done.. if we do cromed things, we try to give it a light sand blast first to help it stick better....

Good Luck,

Westin is stainless, not sure if its powder coat or just black paint though, but the material is SS even the chrome ones, or so the shop told me the other day.

I know the GM ones are SS powdercoated, but theyre like 2-3X more than Westin

Wow, not a bad site at all, haven't been to that one before. I see that they list the Westin grill guard as follows:

App: 2003-2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Brand: Westin Grille Guard - Sportsman 1 Piece Series - Black Powder Coat, Stainless Steel

Part #: W16401175

Series Sportsman 1 Piece Series

However, when I check the Westin website, they list the sportsman 1-piece as only being available in a mild steel for the black powdercoat finish (5 yr warranty).

From Westin website:

SPECIFICATION:

Material: Chrome - Stainless Steel

Black - Mild Steel

Black Powdercoat

Black Powdercoat - 5-Year

Aggghhhh, I hate conflicting info :rollin: . I guess I'll try contacting Westin directly to get the low down, all I want is a SS grill guard with a black finish. Anything that's a regular mild steel doesn't last long in the salt laiden winters here whether it's powdercoated or not. I haven't looked at the "gm" guards yet, I take it those would be on "gmpartsdirect.com" to view, with an insightful description as usual  ? Thanks for the responses guys!

    • 10 Ford and Chevy engines proven to reach 300,000 miles   You may note a common 3K OCI on this list of gas motors. I skipped over the diesels. Dh'O.
    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.
    • apparently CA smog is (or at least was)  checking that the vehicle is using the oem and/or a ca smog approved tune, so I expect you'll fail inspection doing it.
    • yes, leaking exhaust will mess up o2 sensor readings, which in turn messes up fuel trims.

Sylvania Silver Star replacements.  Gas seal between the porcelain and shell of plug #3 was blown, cooked the coil. That was the cold miss.  Love the new exhaust. I can sneak into the neighborhood again.  Nice to have a working parking brake again. Belle Tire never got it done. That was disappointing.    This was one of her bigger bills and still way cheaper than a payment even given the oil consumption. This thing cost me under a hundred a month in repairs and normal routine costs. What is my incentive to replace it? 🤔
