Brake Squeal

I've noticed that my brakes are started to squeal on occasion. This usually happens in the morning or when the truck has not been moved for about 8hrs or so. I check the rotors for any wear and they are fine. The brake pads also look good and still seem to have some life to them. I have 4-wheel disk all around. Any idea of what I should do. Thanks

It's the semi-metallic pads that the truck comes with. My '03 did the same thing. It was mostly noticable in fast food drive-thrus because the window is down and the sound amplifies off the brick building. I changed my pads for some Raybestos QS (quiet stop) ceramic pads and haven't heard a peep out of them.

My fathers Duramax Express Van does the same thing, and the dealer puts some grease on the rotors and it goes away for a couple months but still comes back. If it really annoys you, might do some good to get quiet stop brake pads as suggested above.

Bob, I would also suggest the Raybestos Ceramics. They are our (CARQUEST) supplier and we have great results with them. If you go to one of our stores, you want the BCD series which is our better ceramics. We offer a gold series and they will last longer but are harder and will make slightly more noise. If you do this, I would strongly suggest having the rotors resurfaced by someone you know will do it right. Wash them real good before putting them back up to remove all of the small metal pieces. The last thing I do before I install the pads is to wipe them down with alcohol to remove any grease or dirt I got on them while installing them.

If you do this and do it correctly, you will not have to worry about squeal.
