I have a 2005 K2500 suburban with 6.0 and 3.73 gears. It has a tow capacity of 7600 lbs. The 4.10 gears give it a towing capacity of 9600 lbs. Is the gears the only differance making the tranny the weak point of the truck? I can't beleive 3.73 to 4.10 gears will make 2000 lbs towing difference.

you'd be amazed of what a 4.10 will do.

However, you may want to check your tow numbers. My 2002 with the 5.3l and 3.73 is rated to tow 7600lbs.

I would expect the 3/4ton with the 6.0 to do better.

I had 3.73 gears in my previous truck=constant downshifting to keep speed/go uphill with my rather lightweight boat.

 

I have 4.10's (actually 3.83's now with my 285 tires) in my '03=almost never downshifting (a little more with the new tires).

 

It's all about saving your tranny from excess work. You motor will go all day, but your tranny won't if it's constantly struggling to keep up.

 

Are you needing to tow more than 7600 lbs.? You'll be ok if you do, and nothing may ever happen, but GM wants to find ways out of paying for it if it does. Lord knows we all overload our trucks form time to time!

It's all about torque multiplication. Torque creates movement. The 4.10 gears transfer the engine's torque to the ground more efficiently.

Yes, but since you have 4WD, you need to change both axles, front and rear. Not sure if BryanH's # included that, the link in his post was broken.

 

Figure $600-$700 per axle to have it done at a good shop.

Apparently 4wheelparts is having troubles with that page. Just go to http://www.4wheelparts.com and browse to it.

 

They're running a 15% off front and rear gear set kits. the 600-700 estimate was for the gear set kits. Not labor.

I see a few of you have k2500 suburbans. I have had mine for a little over a month and love it, other than the mileage. I plan on pulling a 8000lbs travel trailer next summer. So until then I plan on beefing it up a little. Maybe a PCM tune, larger tranny cooler, maybe different gears, larger tranny pan. Anybody put in a tranny shift kit? Just in the wishing stage right now. I have all winter.

I pulled about 7000 lbs a couple times with virtually the same set up you have. I didn't have any upgrades to it and the truck pulled like a charm (granted I didn't do anything serious like the appalacians or rockies...) I did about 5 hours of rolling hills with the cruise set to 70 and it only really had to downshift once or twice on the long uphills.

 

Its a bit funny but the 6.0 doesn't feel like it has all that much power just around town but as soon as you put a trailer on it and put in tow/haul mode the PCM knows what you're up too and just keeps on pullin.

 

Have you pulled yet with it?

 

(no doubt about it though... 4.10s and a tune will really increase towing ability)

I have the PCM tune, and have increased my transmission cooler with a larger B&M cooler in my '02 suburban.

 

The PCM tune helped me get things rolling faster, and it seems stronger when pulling.

 

I tow a travel trailer that is closer to 5,000 lbs. The thing I have noticed after pulling the trailer up long grades, the engine temperature recovers much quicker than the transmission even with the upgraded cooler. The grades I am referring to are in Pennsylvania and Maryland along I-70. I would probably try a thermostat/fan cooled cooler if I was going to go to heavier a trailer or pull the current trailer out west.

I'm not real concerned with long grades. I live in Minnesota. Not many long grades around here.

I live in Ohio, and the cooling doesn't seem to be an issue even in the rolling hills in southern ohio.

    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver. 
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....  
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps. 
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.  
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
