Bought New Truck Now Fuel Problem

Well i just bought my 2001 yukon (has 107000 miles) last weekend. My wife was driving it on the interstate and it putted and stalled out so she had to call and have it towed home(thank god for AAA) . Once she got it home i looked at it started it up and it sat there a stumbled trying to ideal then it died. I started it back up and it ran good for a sec then stumbled and died. So I decided the best place to start was change the fuel filter. So took the filter off and it had lots of dark old crap in it so it looked like it might have been clogged while it was of i turned the key to run to see if fuel would flow like normal. It flowed out solid and strong for the few secs I had it on. After i put the new one on and primed it it started stumbled for a sec then ran great. I have put about 15- 20 miles on it with no problem with all sorts of loads 4x4 and 4x4 low and 2x4 nailing if from a stop all with no problems.

Did the car GODS shine on me and make it an easy 8 dollar fix or is it just to easy?

 

Is there any test i can do to see if im in the clear?

 

Does anyone think it is something other then fuel problems?

 

I have efilive so if it happens agian i will try to get a log of it but im hoping its not going to happen agian.

well I guess your lucky, because it could have been the fuel pump as gm is notorious for underpar fuel pumps.

Did you buy it from a dealership or private sale? If you bought it from a dealership considering you just got it last weekend I would bring it to them and explain what happened and the fact that you had to replace the fuel filter (which they should have done among other things before selling it if the vehicle had a questionable maintenance history). They should check the fuel system for free IMO.

 

BTW if the fuel filter was that clogged then the previous owner may not have kept up with other maintenace items. You may want to consider doing some potentially overdue maintenance:

 

Transmission filter and fluid

Front and rear differential fluid

Transfer case fluid

Cooling system flush and fill

Plugs and wires

Air filter

Check to make sure they have been keeping up with chasis lube

Any other items???

 

Many of the above are 100k maintenance items and you might be right on track doing them now unless you know they've already been done.

d**n 107000 is far from new

 

but if they skipped the filter all the way to 107k that could hurt the fuel pump,

I had one that the pump was very loud we chenged the filter and it went quiet plus it did not hesitate when I floored it.

I'm guessing that its HEI ignition - check on the coil too ..

If it was that dirty you might want to change out the filter one more time. Inspect it to see if more debris is in the filter. If it is prett cruddy, you may have to drop the tank and clean it. And Im with chris, if that was neglected, better start checking fluids.

The fuel tank seems to be made out of a plastic so i dont see why it would need any coating. I dont think it needs to be changed seeing as its a 2001 and i dont see very many of them needing to be changed. ( other people chime in and tell me what they thing of this)

 

I was planing on seafoaming the fuel, oil, and top end and mybe changing the fuel filter agian.

 

I got it from a dealer and it was most likely there a while.

You should be able to just clean out the plastic tank if your second fuel filter still shows signs of contamination.

I'm in the same boat. Changed my filter , drove for about 10 min. and chugged then puked. Had to pull it home, Got it to start, and chugged it into the garage.

 

It would rev to about 1500 then drop to idle , sputter , die. Now I have no pressure at the fuel rail.

My truck just started acting weird on me tonight. I replaced the fuel filter about a month or more ago. Tonight I was running on fumes so I stopped at the gas station, filled it up then went across the street to get some food. Get in the truck after eating and it would turn over but die right away. I had to give it some gas to get it to stay running. It did that a couple times untill I floored it to try and unclog something that may have been clogged.

 

Then on the way home something happened with the electrical system. When driving the airbag and ABS light would continue to flash and all the other gauges would drop for a second as if the truck was off. But at a stop light ideling it wouldnt do it, only when giving it gas. When I stopped to check on it I wiggled the wire coming off the positive from the battery and the lights and radio starting going bonkers. It did that for a few seconds then stopped. I checked both connections to the battery and they were both tight. So i have no clue what the problem could be.

 

Im gonna be driving cross country from Wisconsin to California in a week or two and cant afford to have this happening to me. Any recommendations on things I should check/change/fill before I start my trip??

I was wondering if the fuel pump relay could bad , or my new filter is plugged. Maybe the fuel pressure regulator.

 

Later I'm going to pull off the filter and see if I'm getting any fuel to it.

 

Anyone know if fuel pumps die slowly, or do they just quit?

Wow, that's some serios thread hi-jacking...

 

Anyhow, to original post if you bought at a dealership you should still see if they are willing to help. If they are reputable they might admit the truck was lacking routine maintenance that should have been done before the sale. If it has bigger issues such as coating in the tank flaking (although I've never heard of this) then again hopefully they will admit they sold you a truck with issues and help you out. If not, I'd check to see if your state has any kind of buyer protection laws as a new tank and labor will be some $.

Yeah, sorry about the hi-jack. At the time it seemed the problems could be kinda related.

 

I'll go back to the garage and inhale some more gas fumes.
