Oil Viscosity Question...

Recommended Posts

I just did my 1st oil change, and half way through the process I discovered I had inadvertantly purchased 5W-20 instead of 5W-30 oil! It's the Quaker State Q Torque Power Full Synthetic Truck Oil, and seem to have a good rating, but I'm concerned about the lower viscosity than is recommended in the owner's manual! Should I drain and re-fill or leave it as is and put the proper viscosity in at the next oil change (normal change intravel for me is 3K miles)?

Also, has anyone else used Q Torque Power and actually seen any difference in performance, or is this just another advertising gimmick? It was on sale, so I thought I'd give it a try. Normally I use Mobil 1 or Penzoil (my actual preference is Penzoil full synthetic). Thanks for any help!

Personally, I'd drain it and put in the proper viscosity. I don't think you'll do any damage by keeping it in for 3k, but I'm pretty picky when it comes to oil. especially as its a new vehicle, they could use this against you if you needed warranty work done and they found you use the wrong oil.

If its getting cold there, you may be ok though.

I would have to agree with Aiden. I am sure it will do no harm but since it is new, I would consider the cost to change it to 5w 30 a minimum investment compared to any warranty issues it may bring up later.

I use 5W 20 in my Caravan because this is what is recommended. It actually states in the owners manual that any other weight of oil could void the warranty.

I have to agree as well. I would drain it and refill it with 5w30 and leave the filter alone. Not sure the 20 weight would do harm but it requires 30 weight for a reason I'm sure.

Thats about as old of an old wives tail that there is out there. Penzoil and Quaker State are both owned by Schell. Both have been reformulated for a long time. The are no bad name brand oils today. They are all are SM rated and API tested and approved. And I havn't looked lately but Penzoil is probably on GMs approved list.

+1 as stated above. If you are easy on the truck you will be ok for 3k miles. However, is you haul any weight or tow or do spirited driving, drain and fill. BTW 3k oil changes are outdated also. With todays SM rated oils 5k dino and 7.5k syn should be a bare minimum.

I would love to see your scientific data on that. Some how I doubt you would be able to provide that :) .

I used penzoil every 5k for the last 10 years on this truck. It is not expensive + I think the yellow container looks nice. I'll feed my truck penzoil another 20 years and ckeck for varnish then. Then I'll make sure to post my results here.

I'm just not worried about any of today's motoroils.

As far as your question about viscosity. I too think that 5W-20 would probably not hurt it. But I too would make sure the truck has what the manufacturer said. So I would change it and put that 5W-30 in.
