s10473 Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 I have a 03 Silverado with a single Cd player radio that is not XM ready. I have read many posts and still have some questions. Does the radio have to be Xm ready? Gm part number 12498768 I read is what I need. Or JP Customs http://www.jpcustoms.com/store/customer/home.php?cat=676 will work also. Not sure what part on there site I need, any help woud be great. Is there any thing else that I will need to complete this?

Not sure what part on there site I need, any help woud be great. Is there any thing else that I will need to complete this? On the NBS Silverado's and Sierra's the radio needs to be XM Ready... meaning the radio has a CAT buttom for XM category's and the buttons for presets needed to have a dash instead of numbers. The NBS radio's have dash's for the presents because you can have in your favorite 6 presets, XM, AM and FM without changing the band. On my old Siverado this was not an option. It only had 6 presets and i had to change the band to get between, AM, FM and XM. I'm pretty sure the factory radio needs to be XM ready for the devices to work. You can call your local dealer and have them look up the OEM GM XM module for your truck and with your vin they should be able to tell you if your radio is compatible. As for the aftermarket kits from JP Customs... I'm not sure what to tell you about aftermarket working with your factory deck. I tried the aftermarket on my NBS and had to send it back and go with the OEM XM module. The aftermarket XM modules may work on later model trucks, but I would use caution or make sure you can return it if it does not work. Sorry I can't offer any more help, good luck and worst case there is always the portable XM units.
MS3DALE Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 If you PM me your VIN I can tell you if your radio is XM ready or not. Generally all but the base AM/FM Radios were XM ready,So all you need is the GM accessory XM kit.
Guest chevydeerhunter Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Your radio has to have the "Band" button and must be RDS capable.
rossn2 Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 Why not just go to Best Buy and get an XM Commander? It takes about an hour to install, usually for free when you buy the XM Commander. All you need is the antenna coupler that costs about $16 or so. The cord is long enough on the Commander to hide it if you want to and just attach the head unit with a piece of velcro to the dash... Just a thought...
