Changing Tranny Fluid

Recommended Posts

Im not going to ask the same old questions ( to flush or not to flush) I just have a simple question.

I would like to drop the pan on my 04 burb with 40,000 miles, change the filter and add the oil that was lost while changing the pan.

1) how hard is it to do ?

2)how many qts of fluid do I need ?

3) what tranny fluid do I need

4) How hard is it to change the filter ?

I know its a messy job, but I think I might chance it

thanks

Scott

1.Not hard, if you can drain it first its way easier, use a bottle jack under your ratchet which better have a 6 point on it, or you are going to strip it, this method worked very good for me first try.

2.I think its 5, but not more than 6.

3.Dextron III, I personally use valvoline.

4.filter just pulls out, but there is a seal up in the valve body. my advise is to leave the seal there and reuse it. first reason is the seal is in there good and you have to use a puller against the aluminum valve body, which dents easily. second reason, and this is personal for me, is that you have to really seat that seal, using a socket works great. i didnt do this right once, and the filter fell after about a week of driving it around. Lets just say i now have a rebuilt tranny in, that was going to need replacing after we tore into it, but not necessarily right then :ughdance:

Overall its not a hard procedure, just make sure you can get to a shower quickly, and have a wide pan. Once again, not hard, just make sure you seat that seal.
