When To Change Break In Fluids

Recommended Posts

Posted

I purchased a 2007 Z71 last week.Ive already changed the engine oil and filter at 650 miles. When is a good mileage to change the transmission, transfer case and axle fluids to get the break in metals out of there.I was planning to use Royal Purple Max Gear 75w90 in the axles and Castrol DexVI in the transmission and transfer case.Sound good? Also I want to use a pan that has a drain plug on the trans mission that will retain the stock depth of a deep GM pan and can use a stock type filter.Anyone have a recomendations on a good pan.

Heres what I've always done for "first" fluid changes in all my past trucks....

First oil change-1,500 miles,then every 3,000 miles.

First rear-end fluid change-4,500 miles,then every 10,000 miles.

First transfer case fluid & front axle fluid change-15,000 miles, then every 30,000 miles.

First transmission fluid flush & filter change-30,000 miles, then every 30,000 miles.

First Dex-Cool coolant change-50,000 miles,then every 50,000 miles.

I also change the brake fluid every two years regardless of mileage.

You should have waited till at least 3000mi on the engine oil and GM does not use break-in oils. Many people including myself change the fluids by the scheduled maintenance chart it the owners manual. The engine, transmission, transfer case & differentials have magnets to collect any shavings that my result from wear.
