i have a 2004 gmc sierra 1500 i have a kn cold air intake on it with a tornado in it...and i was wanting to buy a 180 degree therm but all the stores i call have to oreder it in and dont know how they cost..if anyone knows i would like to know ......so im tempted to just buy the 190 degree for 20 bucks and tax...can anyone tell me if the 180 is a big difference then 190?

sry i ment 160 instead of 190

You want to stick with the original 195 thermo.

Running a 160 degree unit will not let the engine reach proper operating temperature and keep the computer in open loop or warm up mode... It'll get terrible fuel mileage. There is no be benefit to running a cooler thermostat in a computer controlled engine unless you have a tuner that specifically allows you to change the settings for it.

Just plopping in a lower temp thermostat won't give you any added performance.

Completely agreed. There's especially no point in running a 160 Tstat with out electric fans. With electric fans you can tune them to come on at certain temps. But to truely get the most out of a thermostat, besides E-fans, is tuning. Basically you can bump up the timing a bit more since the combustion chambers will be cooler, plus it helps with knocking (pre detonation) 180* T-stat is so close to stock I wouldn't bother.

basically I'd save it for the last bolt on, or if/whenever you do electric fans. It's a good, cheap benefit like said to help eliminate pre detonation and cool the combustion chambers, or run extra timing, but without proper tuning it's mildly worthless.

Yeaaah... not to change the topic or anything (well, too late), but I'd also ditch that metal "Tornado" thing while you're at it. Those are pretty well known as being useless. Hopefully you're still able to return it though. :)

But if you haven't already, and want more power, a good custom tune is the way to go.

I have a 160* sitting in my garage waiting to be installed after I eventually send my wait4me back to be tuned for it. I'm kind of worried about winter time whether the truck will reach warm enough temps with it.

I put a 180 in my 6.0 the other day, but I haven't ran it yet. There is tons of discussion of this on FSC and the concensus seems to be the 180 is best all around. I'm having my PCM tuned in a week or 2 anyway. In a few more weeks I will be putting in 05 fans.
