Cam Prices?

So i talked to a shop around san antonio this past week and we came to a conclusion on what would be a good cam for my truck... we came up with a 220/220 comp cam($390.00)...comp cam 918 springs($179.00)...and hardened pushrods(132.99)...and then $550.00 for installation. Then after that the guy told me I should get headers too because the stock headers were very constrictive and I would see a lot more power from the cam that way....is he lying or is this something I should do? Thank you all for your help in making my decision that much easier!

Headers would certainly be good... especially with the cam. Check Jegs.com and Summitracing.com before you pay those prices though. Even if you don't buy from them you will have the ammo to negotiate a decent total price from your buddy's shop.

With a 220 220 cam your going to loose low end power, you'll want a torque converter with a higher stall to make up for it. Lingenfelter sells comp cams for $350~, summit sells trickflow push rods for $80, and lingenfelter also sells LS6 valve springs for $50, their good up to .580 lift, comp 918s are good up to .600. You'll also need a new/longer crank pulley bolt, water pump gaskets, crank seal, new oil/filter. All the gaskets are re useable, but for insurance you'll want a timing cover gasket. If he takes the heads off, you'll need new head gaskets and head bolts. Valve seals are a good idea while your in there.

Okay so I dont want to lose low end power :ughdance: I want to gain everything a lose nothing! I really just want to get something that will give me more acceleration and more horsepower without having to do a overhaul on the tranny...the guy said that the the cam, springs, and pushrods came in a kit...what about a 212/216 cam??? im kind of new to perfomance so i need all the help i can get :flag: Do you think that they will know to get the longer crank pulley bolt gaskets...i mean from what i heard the shop(nelson performance) is a really good shop and I dont think they would do anything half assed but i have been wrong before

Nelson performance tuning?? Rest assured he's one of the best. But with a 220 220 (thunder racing's camshaft I'm assuming) you would loose some low end torque. It's an excelent cam for mid and high range though. The cam I'm putting in is comps 212 218, it's probobly the biggest you can go without needing a torque converter or immidiate tuning. Comps next larger grind, a 216 220 does result in a bit of low end loss. Ask Nelson about the 212 218 from Comp, he will give some details (it's a popular cam for 5.3's), but tell him your not in the market for a new torque converter yet, so a 220 220 isn't ideal.

He probobly knows about the crank bolt, it's only 2 bucks! Same for the water pump gaskets. ALL the gaskets on these engines are reuseable, except the head gaskets, I got new ones for insurance because if I mess one up I don't/can't wait a week for a new one to come in.

Yeah I'm going to get tune next weekend hopefully  which brings along another question....when i get bigger tires can that callibrate for bigger tires or will i have to get something else to do that? I remember that my old hypertech could recallibrate for the tires...anyway yeah the 212 218 sounds good!

    • I’m doing an experiment on a vehicle I don’t have much money in. I’m going by the premise that after they last 100K miles they were no mechanical problems with assembly. Or defects with the parts. With oil changes by the minder for the first 127K miles when I acquired it. I quickly went through low mileage oil changes then settled on 5k oil changes with close to 170K miles on the vehicle currently. I did have the option to turn off the cylinder deactivation. I didn’t on this vehicle because in ECONOMY mode at least half the time. It should be a no brainer frequent oil changes are the key. The manufacturer gets away with the long oil changes with its severe service  maintenance. Just ask them what is normal.
    • Even set to "recirculated", the air pushes out and is hot. I have noticed that sometime it doesn't want to switch between recirculated/vented air. Say it is set to Circulated Air and I want to switch to Vented, when I click the Vented button, it just quickly lights up/clicks and immediatly switches back to Circulated. It's done this a few times now. So maybe it is an actuator getting stuck? But then, that doesn't explain the hot air when everything is off does it?
    • I wonder what the price is out at the coast, Big Sur or other out of the way locations as I bet they are charging quite a premium over the in land pumps.
    • Were you looking at the HD trucks on the GM website or the half tons as that makes all the difference. As far as I know there are only two options for the HD trucks and that is the standard 2 speed transfer case or the 2 speed transfer case that has the added 4 high auto feature and they put that transfer case by default into the LTZ and High Country although its optional in the LT and not sure if its available in the work trucks.    The half tons, that is where its been a total mess in my estimation for a few years now with most trucks below the top trim having the single speed transfer case as standard but with the option of having the two speed such as one would get by choosing the Z71 package, however then not being able to get the two speed transfer case with the towing package unless it was a higher trim truck AND had the 6.2 gas so one could combine the towing package gearing diffs with the two speed transfer case. Having said that if its a trail boss package then it gets the two speed transfer case but not necessarily able to get the tow package as it would depend on trim level and engine chosen. Believe me, people have bought the GM half tons assuming "of course it will have a two speed transfer case" only to find out after when they really pay attention to what they now own .... crap, there is NO low range !.    I don't believe Ford or Ram have gone that way yet with their half tons but like I say its been a few years now that GM has done this with the half tons.
