I am looking at getting an exhaust and think I have decided to go with Flowmaster because of the price. I called them and talked to the sales guy there and told him that I wanted something that had a little sound to it but nothing that would bug me on road trips, he told me that I should look at a 5x8x20. When I told him that I wanted to do a single in and duel out he said that it would hurt my performance and I would loose power on the low end, if I went with a duel on the back side of the muffler. I just want to know if any one has heard of this?

I run a stainless Flowmaster 50 series on my 5.3l GMC, single in dual out - I love the sounds :)

I have been considering a single large glasspack, for cost reasons, has anyone tried this?

gmcjoe, I was looking at the 50 series also for my 5.3 Silvy. Is that clip of the SUV/Big Block/HD/Delta Flow? I have heard the Big Block 50 series on a 2500HD 6.0. It sounded good, but I would like somthing louder, much like yours. Thanks!

Just go to a muffler shop and have them cut out and replace your muffler with a 50 series or a super 44.

No idea, but it retains your stock pipes which should keep your back pressure close enough to stock.

it shouldn't hurt your performance at all running single in dual out. if you have dual pipes underneith and run them into a single inlet muffler that will hurt the low end torque alot. 50 series is one of the most popular because it doesn't give off any interior resonance, 40 series drones a bit and doesn't sound the best. Super 40 & Super 44 are great mufflers, the 44 is the best, deep toned idle, loud aggressive WOT, and tolerable on highway speeds. the loud 10 series is pretty sweet too. I kinda wish I got those instead of 44s. But then again I haven't been able to install the 44s yet so I hope I like them.

I believe it is the delta flow technology 50 series, not the SUV.

Under WOT my 50 sounds pretty d**n good IMO, there is a very slight drone at 2K at slower speeds, depends on what gear the automatic chooses at that particular moment.

 

I've had this setup since 2001 or so and have plenty of highway miles on this truck, no issues :lol:

Wow, I've heard and read that flowmaster mufflers are bad for rusting, which was one concern of mine. But, since 2001...sounds great! :lol:

While Flowmaster mufflers don't rust out any quicker than others, my current muffler is stainless, it's been on about 3 years now.

 

My first 50 series was a non-stainless and installed in 2001. That lasted about 3 years including michigan winters on salted roads. That one did rust through. I don't know of any aftermarket muffler that will last much longer under those conditions driving as much as I do :crackup:

I personally have a true dual setup each cat got its own Flowmaster 40 series. They are dumped right before the rear axle and they sound mean. However I did loose a noticeable amount of off the line grunt. I knew this was going to happen. Also the gas mileage went down. The reason is that the engine is tuned to run with a certain amount of backpressure. So my original exhaust was 2.75 inches for all 8 cylinders. When I had the exhaust put on they put on 2.5 inches for each muffler so essentially four cylinders have 2.5 inches and the other four have their own 2.5 inches. This really hurt performance even though it sound wicked. I did this because my hand held programmer was on its way. This of course took care of the problem and my mileage went up better than stock (hand calculated not DIC) Also before the programmer it would drone really bad down the highway but now it does not. I would recommend this setup if your going to get a programmer and I also recommend you get an X Pipe to join both exhausts because the low end will benefit from an X Pipe. Just my .02

I love the sound of my SI/DO 40. It has a little bit of drone from about 1400-1800 RPM when accelerating, but other than that, it's pretty quiet in the cab. At highway speeds I can hear it a little bit, but it's still easy to carry on a conversation without yelling.
